MiCE industry to be valued $1245 bn in 2023: Study

The meetings and events industry is projected to reach $1245 billion in 2023, registering a CAGR of 7.5 per cent growth from 2017 to 2023, states a new report published by Allied Market Research, titled, ‘MiCE Industry by Event Type: Global Opportunity Analysis and Industry Forecast, 2017-2023’. According to the report,  the global MiCE industry was valued at $752 billion in 2016. This growth is seen to emerge from rapid globalisation and expansion of service industries, and evolution of scientific and technological innovations. The meetings segment dominated the global MiCE industry in 2016, due to the growth of the travel and tourism industry, increase in international business travels, and rise in government initiatives for the development of MICE segment & SME sector. Recent trends of organising hybrid meetings, and use of social media and meeting apps are  expected to the boost market growth in the near future. Asia-Pacific is expected to witness the highest growth rate of 8.6 per cent during the forecast period. This region is significantly driven by emerging countries such as Singapore, China, and India. Moreover, ease of visa restrictions, investments in better infrastructure, and high demand in commercial aviation further fuel the growth of the Asia-Pacific MiCE industry. The report also stated that in 2016, Europe dominated the global market with more than 42 per cent market share, in terms of value.

Singapore Global Convention from Dec 14-15

ITB Asia 2017 underway in Singapore

ITB Asia 2017 is underway  at the Sands Expo and Convention Centre in Marina Bay Sands, Singapore. Over 940 exhibitors from 951 buyers from MICE, corporate, leisure and other sectors with over 11,000 delegates are attending the event. The programme features its strongest line-up of exhibitors and speakers, as well as many firsts for the travel trade show. While African and Russian markets make a strong showing at this year’s show, North Asia features prominently with a strong showing by Japan and South Korea. Running parallel with the exhibition, the conference programme looks into ‘The Future of Travel’. The three-day conference presents an extensive programme of presentations and discussions. Singapore most powerful passport, India at number 75

According to Passport Index developed by global financial advisory firm Arton Capital, Singapore tops the rank of being the most powerful passport in the world under the Global Passport Power Rank 2017. This ranks passports of the world by their total visa-free score. Singapore is closely followed by Germany, Sweden and South Korea who are tied at number three, followed by eight other countries holding the number four spot jointly. The Indian passport appears at number 75 with a visa-free score of 51, ranking even lower than African countries like Zimbabwe, Rwanda and Sierra Leone. Some of the countries with a lower ranking than India are Egypt, Bhutan Cambodia, Jordon and our neighbours Sri Lanka and Nepal. The last on the list is Afghanistan with a score of 22 preceded by Iraq and Pakistan with a joint visa-free score of 26.

Asia-Pacific sees growth in the meetings and events space: CWT

A report on future trends in the meetings and events space by the CWT Meetings & Events (CWT M&E), a division of global travel management company Carlson Wagonlit Travel, revealed that the overall cost per attendee per day for meetings and events around the globe increased in 2017 and is expected to continue rising next year. Titled as 2018 Meetings and Events Future Trend, the report also looks into regional differences and cost projections, as well as the latest industry trends and top destinations. According to the report, the cost per attendee per day for meetings and events in Asia Pacific has increased by 5 per cent in 2017, the greatest for any region globally. It stated that the prices are not changing much in Asia Pacific, for either hotels or air fares, with a surge of 3.5 per cent and 2.8 per cent respectively. Tigerair now collaborates with Scoot

Nine months after Scoot and Tigerair announced their intention to pursue a single brand and operating licence under the enhanced Scoot brand, the airline industry bid farewell to Tigerair Singapore as its last flight departed Singapore for Tiruchirappalli on July 24. Now, all previous Tigerair flights will be operated under the Scoot brand and Scoot flights will operate under the TR flight designator code. This marks the completion of the Scoot-Tigerair integration process that began last May when the airlines were brought under a common holding company, Budget Aviation Holdings. After successfully commencing operations in India last year, value airline Scoot is all set to take up new destinations under its umbrella that were running under Tigerair. These include Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Kochi, Tiruchirappalli and Lucknow which will now operate under the single brand name – Scoot from July 25, 2017. The 4th edition of Madhya Pradesh Travel Mart (MPTM) will be held from October 27-29, 2017, in Bhopal, informed Hari Ranjan Rao, Secretary, Tourism and Public Service Management and Managing Director, Madhya Pradesh State Tourism Development Corporation. Over 200 national and international buyers and around 100 exhibitors of distinct Indian markets are expected to participate in the mart. With the theme, Seek-Discover-Explore, the mart will offer a B2B platform to bring together tourism stakeholders and representatives from heritage hotels, conference venues, tour operators and wildlife parks etc. The mart is supported by various trade organisations, like ADTOI, ATTOI, IATO, FAITH, TAAI and TAFI. ‘GST will make India uncompetitive as a MICE destination’

The recent announcement of the Goods and Services Tax slab is predicted to reduce chances of the Indian MICE market as a destination globally.  Neeraj Govil, Area Vice President-South Asia, Marriott International, says, “We are complying with the GST. Most of our big hotels are under 28 per cent space and the rest are under 18 per cent space. We haven’t had any adverse impact at this point of GST but I think it will make international MICE all the way more difficult to get because India will become uncompetitive as a destination with our GST at 28 per cent. While other destinations like Singapore, Bangkok, Hong Kong and Dubai have significantly lower GST rate.”

GPS to introduce international destination workshops

The second leg of this year’s GPS, starting July 13, will launch an unique programme of introducing educational workshops with international destinations. Harmandeep Singh Anand, Managing Director, GPS, says, “We have started working with international tourism boards to do an educational workshop for travel agents starting this September-October. Titled ‘GPS Educational Destination Workshop – International’ (EDWIn), it will involve interested agents signing up to travel to a particular international destination to learn about the country at a highly subsidised participation fee.” GPS has already tied up with Singapore Airlines as its international airline partner as well as Genting HK. It is also in talks with various NTOs including Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand, Indonesia, the Philippines, Korea, UAE, Egypt, Turkey and Greece. GPS will soon launch a similar programme for domestic destination in partnership with various state boards. Anand explains further, “This will be open only to tier II and tier III travel agents as they are the ones who don’t get enough exposure to the trade as against those in metro cities.” Hitting five more cities through July and August this year is the second leg of the Global Panorama Showcase (GPS – the multi-city trade show for tier II and III cities). It will start with Ahmedabad on July 13, going on to Chandigarh on July 20, Kolkata on July 27, reaching Kochi on August 3 and ending in Pune on August 10. The show will stay in each of these cities for three days.
