ASEAN tourism ministers recognise successful MICE venues

Tourism Ministers from 10 ASEAN countries recently presented the certificate of ASEAN MICE Venue Standards (AMVS) to successful MICE venues from member countries namely Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, Philippines, Singapore and Vietnam during the 37th ASEAN Tourism Forum (ATF2018) held during January 22-26, 2018, in Chiang Mai. Supawan Teerarat, Senior Vice President, Strategic Business Development and Innovation, TCEB, said, “The AMVS programme has been developed as a result of the nationwide success of the Thailand MICE Venue Standard (TMVS) which initiated by TCEB.  TCEB has defined a strategic roadmap throughout the development course and has been working closely with the nine member countries, namely Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, Philippines, Singapore and Vietnam. TCEB had organised five meetings to provide details and clarify the criteria of the AMVS standards for the member countries. At present, the AMVS cover three categories, namely (1) Meeting/Conference Venue or Room (2) Exhibition Venue, and (3) Event Venue. The standards include three key criteria namely 1. Physical Setting (32 indicators) 2. Technology (10 indicators) and 3. Service (13 indicators). Philippines Tourism & Singapore Airlines join hands to augment India arrivals

The Department of Tourism (DOT), Philippines has signed a Memorandum of Agreement with Singapore International Airlines (SIA) on December 12 to perk up a significant increase in Indian arrivals into the Philippines. Through the one-year collaboration, DOT and SIA will undertake joint marketing initiatives that will implement activities to promote the Philippines to the Indian market through social media, familiarisation tours, roadshows, among others. The agreement was signed by Benito Bengzon Jr., Under Secretary, DOT  and Campbell Wilson, Senior Vice President for Sales and Marketing, SIA at the Makati Diamond Residences, Philippines. “The India market is growing at a very fast rate. In fact, we are expecting to reach 100,000 arrivals by end of 2017. This joint agreement is envisioned to sustain and further strengthen this growth in the coming years,” said Bengzon. He also disclosed that the department is not only looking at the headcount but also with the revenue it would generate. According to Wilson, this mutually beneficial agreement will pave way for a positive impact on the country’s tourism industry. “We are confident we can increase visitor arrivals; it is an honour to bring our passengers anywhere in the Philippines,” he said.

PHILINDEX 2017 captivates Chandigarh

Department of Tourism (DOT), Philippines, along with its prominent travel partners from the destination successfully conducted PHILINDEX 2017 in Hyderabad (October 23), Jaipur (October 24), Chandigarh (October 25) and will conclude in Lucknow on October 27. These roadshows are in line with the destination’s continued efforts to sensitise the Indian markets, especially those of the Tier-II and Tier-III portfolios. Led by Glen Agustin, Officer-in-Charge, Office of Product and Market Development, DOT, Philippines, this was the largest delegation from the destination to have visited India in recent times and apart from tourism board officials and prominent tour operators, it also included delegates from Singapore Airlines, Philippines Airlines, Cathay Pacific Airlines, Shroff International Travel Care Inc., etc. Talking about the tourism figures from the Indian market at the roadshow in Chandigarh, Glen revealed, “We are very excited to see an average annual growth of 20-22 per cent from the Indian market and are looking to cross the 100,000 milestone by the end of this calendar year. Our team has identified four feeder markets namely Hyderabad, Jaipur, Chandigarh and Lucknow where we see a huge potential to educate and subsequently gain a lot of business through the agents of these regions.’’ The interactive event also saw two regional directors of Philippines in attendance from Mimaropa and Bicol respectively, to inform the agents of the various offerings and opportunities that their region presents to the Indian market. 16th APLIC 2017 from May 17-19 in Malaysia

Malayasia will play host to the 16th Asia Pacific Life Insurance Congress (APLIC) from May 17-19, 2017, at Resorts World, Genting Highlands. Organised by the National Association of Life Insurance and Family Takaful Advisors (NAMLIFA), this is the third time that Malaysia is conducting APLIC after that in 1993 and 2005. The congress is a biennial event that will be co-hosted by member countries of the Asia Pacific Financial Services Association (APFinSA) together with support of Malaysia Convention & Exhibition Bureau (MyCEB), an agency under the Ministry of Tourism and Culture Malaysia. Themed as “Together As One”, the congress aims to promote the business development and productivity of financial services professionals. More than 5,000 life insurance practitioners from 13 countries including Singapore, Thailand, Indonesia, Philippines, Vietnam, India, Sri Lanka, Hong Kong, Macau, Japan, Australia, China and Malaysia will attend the bi-annual event, making it the largest financial services congress in the region. “The 16th APLIC being an international event, is set to promote Malaysia as an international Meetings, Incentives, Conventions & Exhibition destination in Asia.  As we target at least 60 per cent of foreign participation, the inflow of foreign participants will also boost the tourism industry in Malaysia that will have a direct and spillover effect on the local economy,” said Tang Kia Sing, Organising Chairman of the 16th APLIC.

Philippines BOI to craft roadmap for MICE

The Board of Investments (BOI) for the Philippines is teaming up with the Department of Tourism (DOT) and the Philippine Association of Convention/Exhibition Organisers and Suppliers Inc. (PACEOS) to craft a roadmap for the MICE industry. The planned MICE roadmap will seek to enhance the industry’s competitiveness through assessment and formulation of actions plans to address issues and concerns. “The agreement will boost the local tourism industry. Once the MICE roadmap is in place, it will lead to more investments not only in the accommodation sector, but also in the infrastructure side,” Ceferino Rodolfo, Trade Undersecretary and BOI Managing Head, added. Last year, the Philippines registered 5.36 million tourist arrivals. PACEOS aims to make the country a leading exhibition and convention destination in the ASEAN region.

Philippines tourism conducts 4-city road shows in Kolkata, Chennai, Bengaluru and Mumbai

The Department of Tourism (DOT), Philippines conducted a series of road shows covering Kolkata, Chennai, Bengaluru and Mumbai from August 8-11, 2016. The event brought a conglomeration of hoteliers, resorts, spas, representatives of travel attractions and tour operators from the Philippines to interact with over 100 local travel trade partners and buyers in B2B sessions.  Verna C Buensuceso, Director, The Department of Tourism (DOT), Philippines said, “Kolkata, Chennai, Bengaluru and Mumbai are the important feeder markets and hence we are looking forward to strengthening our relations with local travel partners from these cities. Overall, the Philippines is looking forward to welcome 100,000 Indian tourists by 2017.”

Indian trade fair market space sold surges to 7.8 %

India is the fastest growing trade fair market in Asia, with its space sold surging to 7.8 per cent last year, according to 12th edition of UFI annual report on the Trade Fair Industry in Asia. The score for Philippines, Indonesia and Vietnam grew above the regional average of 5.6 per cent. Taiwan grew by 2.2 per cent, while  Japan recorded  a weak  1.2 per cent growth, it stated. Asia’s venue capacity is expected to exceed 7.8 million sq. m. by the end of 2016. Kai Hattendorf, UFI Managing Director, said, “This research serves as a strategic resource for organisers, venues and a variety of exhibition industry stakeholders operating in Asia, as it provides sound and neutral data.”
