Aahar 2018 underway at Pragati Maidan, Delhi


The 33rd edition of Aahar, the International Food & Hospitality Fair, New Delhi, organised by India Trade Promotion Organisation, is underway at Pragati Maidan. Suresh Prabhakar Prabhu, Minister of Commerce & Industry and Civil Aviation of India, inaugurated the fair. The India Trade Promotion Organisation (ITPO), with the support of the Ministry of Food Processing Industries, Agricultural, and Processed Food Products Development Authority (APEDA) and other industry bodies, are the organisers of the event, which will be underway until March 17, 2018, at Hall 7 of Pragati Maidan in New Delhi. Over 900 exhibitors from India and overseas will be exhibiting a wide range of food products, machinery, and equipment. Prabhu at the inaugural address said, ”Food is a very important part of Indian culture and has been a great attraction for the people who visit our country. Every state in our country has different cuisine. Over a period of time, we have started processing food and this is a great transition. India is the largest producer of milk and the second largest producer of fruits and vegetables. Therefore, all this food which is produced is creating a value chain, supply chain, thus adding to the real economic opportunities. This is just a beginning. I don’t think we have even touched the surface of the opportunities that lies in our country and therefore I am happy, that is exactly what has been showcased at Aahar.” The foreign participation is from 18 countries including USA, China, Italy, Poland, Turkey, Spain, Oman, South Korea, Thailand, UAE, Peru, Norway, Indonesia, Canada, Tunisia, Hong Kong, Singapore, and Japan.

Czech Republic opens first visa centre in Goa


The Embassy of the Czech Republic has inaugurated the 16th VFS Global Czech Republic Visa Application Centre in India, in Goa. HE Milan Hovorka, Ambassador of the Czech Republic in India, inaugurated the centre located in Panjim on  January 17, 2018.  He said, “The launch of the Czech Republic Visa Application Centre in Goa reflects the country’s genuine commitment to provide for the growing demands of Visas to the country among Indian tourists, business and culture. As a result of this policy, the Czech Republic has emerged as one of the preferred European destinations for Indian tourists.” The opening of 16 visa application centres in India over a two-year period signifies VFS Global’ s strengthening association with the Embassy of the Czech Republic. Vinay Malhotra, Chief Operating Officer – Middle East and South Asia, VFS Global, said, “Outbound traffic from India is constantly growing, and the Czech Republic in particular is rapidly gaining popularity as a preferred tourist destination among Indian travel enthusiasts. With India being a large source market for travel to Europe, the new centre will help enhance the visa services network for the Czech Republic visa applicants in the region.” Besides Goa, other cities where applicants can submit visa applications for the Czech Republic are Ahmedabad, Bengaluru, Chandigarh, Chennai, Gurugram, Hyderabad, Jaipur, Jalandhar, Kochi, Kolkata, Mumbai, New Delhi,   Puducherry, Pune and Thiruvananthapuram. VFS Global has partnered with the Government of the Czech Republic since 2008, when it first set up visa application operations in Russia. Since then, it has established a robust network of 93 centres across 17 countries for this client government.

Thomas Cook launches new store in New Delhi


Thomas Cook (India) strengthened its presence in North India with the inauguration of a flagship store at Connaught Place. The store was unveiled by Vijay Kumar,  Brand Ambassador, Thomas Cook India. This expansion augments Thomas Cook India’s total number of outlets to 16 consumer access centres with six owned branches and 10 Gold Circle Partner (franchise) outlets in Delhi. Thomas Cook’s new store will offer travellers a range of holiday products (domestic and international tickets, and hotels, cruises, individual and group tours, luxury vacations), foreign exchange, visa services and insurance. Rajeev Kale, ‎President, Country Head–Leisure Travel and MICE, Thomas Cook (India), said, “North India is delivering a strong growth of 20 per cent YoY for our leisure travel business and Delhi has been identified as a prime growth driver as part of our strategic plan. Our new branch at Connaught Place is at a prime location, thus giving our consumers convenient access to a range of holiday products, travel and foreign exchange services.”

ICPB to hold roadshows in Europe


India Convention Promotion Bureau (ICPB) will be conducting roadshows in Europe,  informed Chander Mansharamani, Vice Chairman, ICPB.  He stated this at an interactive meeting of India Convention Promotion Bureau’s (ICPB)  newly elected Governing Board and all members of ICPB at Hotel Samrat, Chanakyapuri, New Delhi. Enlisting new plans of ICPB in 2018, Mansharamani said, “For our international roadshows in Europe, we are planning to go in for three cities, Geneva, Paris and Brussels. Most of the international organisations have headquarters in these three cities.  The department of tourism has already agreed to host the shows. We are raising our own money to hire a PR agency that can get appointments with most of the associations there. That will be between June 12-14.” Elucidating on the roadshows and training programmes in India, he said, “The first roadshow will be in April in Bengaluru. Second, will most probably be in Pune, third will be in Chandigarh and the fourth one will be in Chennai.  The first training programme is on project management, which we are doing for our members. Three more programmes will be based on the certified programmes, where people are certified with international standards, that will be with ICCA and SITE and exhibition industry. The first training programme is in the month of March.” Speaking on the ICPB convention, he concluded, “We are keen to have it in Kolkata, which has an excellent venue. We are planning to have a convention towards the end of August.”

Chander Mansharamani to continue as Vice Chairman, ICPB


Chander Mansharamani has been re-elected as Vice Chairman of India Convention Promotion Bureau (ICPB) for another two-year term. Amaresh Tiwari and Girish Kwatra will also continue on their respective posts of Hon. Secretary and Hon. Treasurer. This was declared during the association’s 30th Annual General Meeting and Elections for the Governing Board held at The Ashok in New Delhi, which was also attended by Suman Billa, Joint Secretary, Ministry of Tourism, Government of India and Chairman, ICPB. New appointments were made in the Hotel, Tour Operator and Congress / Convention Centres categories. The two new appointments in the hotel category were Hemant Mediratta and Saurabh Bhargava & Abinash Manghani (due to a tie for the second post). Gunjan Suri and Naveen Chibber took up the two new posts in the travel agency category while Ajay Vinayak and Anuj Wadhwa took the two posts in tour operator category. The post for the Congress / Convention Centres went to Sudeep Sarcar. Talking about the key priorities for the bureau now, Mansharamani, Vice Chairman, ICPB, said, “The government has been looking at us as the frontal organisation for marketing India as a convention destination. Keeping that in mind, we are completely invested to take things to the next level. Currently, we have outlined three core areas to focus on; first is market creation wherein creating our chapters and bidding of international conferences will be a part of that. Market creation will involve conducting roadshows both in India and international markets. Delhi to host Global MICE Travel Mart


The second edition of the Global MICE Travel Mart (GMTM), the only branded MICE Inbound Tourism platform in India will be held in Delhi from September 14-16, 2017, at The Lalit, New Delhi. The Ministry of Tourism and the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FICCI) are organising the event, which will aim to intensively focus on MICE inbound Tourism and Buyer – Seller Meet over two days. The meet shall reap significant transacting and capitalising of business opportunities between international buyers, opinion leaders from main line associations who organise mega conferences in India and sellers of MICE tourism products in India. The mart will be instrumental in putting MICE destinations in India on the itineraries of the foreign tour operators.

Dusit International opens Global Sales Office in India


Dusit International, Thailand’s hotel and property development company, has opened a new Global Sales Office (GSO) in Mumbai, to promote Dusit Hotels & Resorts in India. The new office will manage sales across all market segments including leisure, MICE and corporate business. Primarily, the team will focus on Tier I cities such as New Delhi, Mumbai, and Bengaluru but will also cover smaller cities. Keshwar Bhagat, Director of Sales – GSO India, will head the India office. Lim Boon Kwee, Chief Operating Officer, Dusit International, says, “With the volume of outbound travel increasing by about 25 per cent a year, India is now one of the fastest growing outbound travel markets in the world. When you consider that the World Tourism Organisation (UNWTO) has predicted the number of outbound Indian travellers will reach 50 million by 2020, now is the perfect time for us to open a GSO in the country. This comes in tandem with our own growth, which will see our current tally of 29 hotels and resorts top 80 worldwide within the next three-to-four years.”

ITDC, AI join hands to train Air India staff on hospitality skills


India Tourism Development Corporation Ltd. (ITDC), signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Air India to upgrade the skills and knowledge base of the national airline’s senior executive & cabin crew in hospitality and service industry. The MoU was signed in the presence of Ashwani Lohani, Chairman and Managing Director, Air India and Sudha Chandra, Principal, Ashok Institute of Hospitality & Tourism Management (AIHTM) and General Manager, HRD ITDC at Air India Head Quarters, New Delhi on May 29, 2017. In line with the MoU, AIHTM conducted a 5-Day training program on Leadership Excellence from July 11-15, 2017 for the first batch of senior executives of Air India at Hotel Samrat, Delhi. Speaking at the Valedictory function held at Hotel Samrat on July 15, 2017, Piyush Tiwari, Officiating Chairman & Managing Director and Director Commercial & Marketing, ITDC, said, “We are going to plan more programmes in the coming quarters for enforcing strength and leadership quality in other organisations as well.”
