Alphons Kannanthanam is the new Tourism Minister

Alphons Kannanthanam has been administered the oath of office as Minister of State (Independent Charge) for the Tourism Ministry by the President of India. He will replace Dr. Mahesh Sharma, MoS (I/C) Tourism and Culture. One of the toppers of IAS batch of 1979, Kannanthanam quit the services in 2006, and was elected a Member of the Legislative Assembly from Kanjirappally in Kottayam District, Kerala. He joined the BJP as Member of National Executive Council in 2011. He is also a practicing advocate in the High Court and the Supreme Court of India. As the Commissioner of Delhi Development Authority from 1992-1997, he demolished 14,310 illegal buildings in Delhi and reclaimed land worth Rs 10,000 crore, giving him the sobriquet of ‘Demolition Man’.

Tourist on e-visa to get free SIM cards

Welcome kits with pre-loaded SIM cards have been launched by Dr. Mahesh Sharma, Minister of State for Tourism & Culture, Govt. of India, in collaboration with BSNL and Telco for the benefit of foreign tourists visiting the country. “We are glad to be launching this initiative and hope it is a success. Our aim is to make the tourists’ stay in India a good one and their safety and security is our utmost concern. Hence, the sim cards have been preloaded with about Rs. 50 talktime and 50mb data so that they can connect with their loved ones after landing in India,” Sharma said. The kit is currently available at T3, Indira Gandhi International Airport and will subsequently be rolled out to 15 other airports where e-visa facility is accepted. Tourists can avail the free sim card from the Bureau of Immigration at the airport after filling out an information form.

IITIS 2016 in Delhi from Sept 21

The Ministry of Tourism have announced the Incredible India Tourism Investor’s Summit 2016 (IITIS) at Vigyan Bhawan, New Delhi, starting on 21 September. Dr. Mahesh Sharma, the  Minister of State for Culture and Tourism, Government of India, said in a statement that the domestic tourism sector is expected to attract investments to the tune of INR 500,000 million from around 600 projects during the three-day investors’ summit.

e-visas for MICE delegates likely: Mahesh Sharma

In an effort to bring India on a par with the US, Germany, Spain, the UK and France, the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) is likely to approve e-visas for the MICE (Meetings Incentives, Conferences Exhibition) segment soon. Tourism and Culture Minister, Dr Mahesh Sharma said, “We have made a proposal to allow e-visa for the corporates from the world over, who want to hold short-term meets and conferences in India, for just the duration of the conference. The segment is a big revenue-generator since most of these people club business with sight-seeing and shopping. We are likely to get a nod soon.”
