Leela to manage Mahatma Mandir, also announces 300-key The Leela Gandhinagar

The Leela Palaces, Hotels and Resorts will now operate and manage the Mahatma Mandir, the country’s largest convention and exhibition centre, after winning the competitive bid and management contract. The 34-acre Mahatma Mandir Convention and Exhibition Centre is a world-class facility for national and international conferences, exhibitions and events. Designed to reflect the life and philosophy of Mahatma Gandhi, this environmentally responsible complex can host about 15,000 people. It includes a convention hall which boasts of a seating capacity of 6,000 people. The hotel chain will also launch The Leela Gandhinagar, a 300-room property which is expected to be the largest property in Gujarat’s capital city, informed Vivek Nair, Chairman and Managing Director, The Leela Palaces, Hotels and Resorts. Commenting on the development, Nair said, “The addition of Mahatma Mandir and The Leela Gandhinagar to our MiCE portfolio reinforces our plan to expand further into the international conferences and events space, and underscores our asset-light growth strategy. Together with the support of the Government of Gujarat, our endeavour is to help transform Gandhinagar into the convention capital of India.” The agreement, effective April 1, 2018, has been signed with Gandhinagar Railway and Urban Development Corporation (GARUD) – a Special Purpose Vehicle formed by the Government of Gujarat with the Indian Railway Stations Development Corporation (IRSDC).

ITDC, AI join hands to train Air India staff on hospitality skills

India Tourism Development Corporation Ltd. (ITDC), signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Air India to upgrade the skills and knowledge base of the national airline’s senior executive & cabin crew in hospitality and service industry. The MoU was signed in the presence of Ashwani Lohani, Chairman and Managing Director, Air India and Sudha Chandra, Principal, Ashok Institute of Hospitality & Tourism Management (AIHTM) and General Manager, HRD ITDC at Air India Head Quarters, New Delhi on May 29, 2017. In line with the MoU, AIHTM conducted a 5-Day training program on Leadership Excellence from July 11-15, 2017 for the first batch of senior executives of Air India at Hotel Samrat, Delhi. Speaking at the Valedictory function held at Hotel Samrat on July 15, 2017, Piyush Tiwari, Officiating Chairman & Managing Director and Director Commercial & Marketing, ITDC, said, “We are going to plan more programmes in the coming quarters for enforcing strength and leadership quality in other organisations as well.”

SpiceJet seals $22 billion deal with Boeing

SpiceJet has inked a deal with Boeing for purchase of upto 205 aircraft. Ajay Singh, Chairman and Managing Director, SpiceJet revealed that the new deal is the enhancement of its existing order of 55 aircraft with additional 100 firm B737-8 MAX and 50 purchase rights for B737-MAX and wide body aircraft. The total orer of 205 aircraft is valued at $22 billion (Rs. 150,000 crores). The aircraft delivery will be done between 2018 to 2020.
