ITB Berlin 2018 kicks off

The Indian delegation, led by KJ Alphons, Minister of State (I/C) for Tourism, Govt. of  India, highlighted the  country’s tremendous tourism potential at the 52nd edition of ITB Berlin which kicked off at the Messe Berlin fairgrounds. The three day event will go on until March 11, 2018. Addressing the media, Alphons spoke about the country’s 5000 year-old civilisation, beautiful beaches, backwaters, desserts, coastline, Himalayas, and immense possibilities for millennials who are looking for adventure. The minister also apprised the audience about the growing yoga and ayurveda related activities and centres in the country, exploring the North East and the great potential of religious tourism, with emphasis on Buddhist tourism. “In terms of general numbers, India has done considerably well last year. 2017 was fantastic! We recorded 15.6 per cent, when the global numbers went up by 5 per cent. Our international tourists arrivals were 16.5 million last year. Are we happy with the numbers? No. We have so much to offer and we want to double the numbers in three years or less, double the revenues in three years or less. India’s tourism contributes about 8 per cent to the GDP of India. We have 14 million people employed in the tourism industry,” Alphons said. In terms of domestic tourism, close to 24 million Indians travelled last year. “In 2017, 1.8 million trips were made by Indians within the country and which will go up to 2 million in 2018 and we want this number to increase dramtically, its not just about international arrivals but also Indians visting India,” he said. MiCE industry to be valued $1245 bn in 2023: Study

The meetings and events industry is projected to reach $1245 billion in 2023, registering a CAGR of 7.5 per cent growth from 2017 to 2023, states a new report published by Allied Market Research, titled, ‘MiCE Industry by Event Type: Global Opportunity Analysis and Industry Forecast, 2017-2023’. According to the report,  the global MiCE industry was valued at $752 billion in 2016. This growth is seen to emerge from rapid globalisation and expansion of service industries, and evolution of scientific and technological innovations. The meetings segment dominated the global MiCE industry in 2016, due to the growth of the travel and tourism industry, increase in international business travels, and rise in government initiatives for the development of MICE segment & SME sector. Recent trends of organising hybrid meetings, and use of social media and meeting apps are  expected to the boost market growth in the near future. Asia-Pacific is expected to witness the highest growth rate of 8.6 per cent during the forecast period. This region is significantly driven by emerging countries such as Singapore, China, and India. Moreover, ease of visa restrictions, investments in better infrastructure, and high demand in commercial aviation further fuel the growth of the Asia-Pacific MiCE industry. The report also stated that in 2016, Europe dominated the global market with more than 42 per cent market share, in terms of value.

India records highest growth rate in visitor arrivals for Singapore

The visitor arrivals from India to Singapore has witnessed a huge increase of one million mark, reinforcing it as one of the most preferred destinations for Indian travellers. The Singapore Tourism Board announced that India moved up from fourth to third place (ahead of Malaysia and behind China, Indonesia) as a visitor arrival source market for Singapore. It recorded the highest growth rate of 16 per cent among all markets. Six  others out of the top 15 markets, including China (+13%), Vietnam (+13%) and USA (+9%) also saw record high visitor arrival. GB Srithar, Regional Director – SAMEA, Singapore Tourism Board, said “We thank the Indian travelers and our travel trade partners for the record 1.27 million Indian visitors to our country in 2017. We will continue to showcase Singapore’s diverse offerings and connect with key audience segments including families, early and established careers, cruise travellers, meetings and incentive groups and travelers from the key metro and secondary cities. With overall tourist outbound from India on the rise, we look forward to another successful year of Indian visitorship to Singapore.We warmly welcome them to live up their passion for exciting travel experiences in our city.” While Mumbai, Chennai, Delhi and Bangalore continue to remain their top VA source cities, STB’s efforts to engage travellers from cities like Ahmedabad, Coimbatore, Hyderabad, Jaipur, Kolkata and Pune have resulted in double-digit VA growth from these cities.

Thailand Convention & Exhibition Bureau (TCEB), with a mission to promote MICE industry in Thailand in partnership with Thai Airways International and Travel Clinic announced a new promotional campaign called ‘Meet by Design’ at an exclusive dinner, ‘Thailand MICE Corporate Networking’  at The Leela Ambience Gurugram Hotel & Residences on February 15, 2018. Nooch Homrossukhon – Director – Meetings and Incentive Department, Thailand Convention & Exhibition Bureau, stated, “We have formed a great partnership in the Indian market, and work very closely with our allied partner like Thai Airways international. ASEAN tourism ministers recognise successful MICE venues

Tourism Ministers from 10 ASEAN countries recently presented the certificate of ASEAN MICE Venue Standards (AMVS) to successful MICE venues from member countries namely Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, Philippines, Singapore and Vietnam during the 37th ASEAN Tourism Forum (ATF2018) held during January 22-26, 2018, in Chiang Mai. Supawan Teerarat, Senior Vice President, Strategic Business Development and Innovation, TCEB, said, “The AMVS programme has been developed as a result of the nationwide success of the Thailand MICE Venue Standard (TMVS) which initiated by TCEB.  TCEB has defined a strategic roadmap throughout the development course and has been working closely with the nine member countries, namely Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, Philippines, Singapore and Vietnam. TCEB had organised five meetings to provide details and clarify the criteria of the AMVS standards for the member countries. At present, the AMVS cover three categories, namely (1) Meeting/Conference Venue or Room (2) Exhibition Venue, and (3) Event Venue. The standards include three key criteria namely 1. Physical Setting (32 indicators) 2. Technology (10 indicators) and 3. Service (13 indicators). The Philippines unveils MICE Roadmap 2030

The Department of Tourism (DOT) of the Philippines has launched a multi-sectoral plan that envisions to re-establish the Philippines as a top international convention destination, as well as a flourishing business and trade hub in the Asia-Pacific region. The DOT and the Tourism Promotions Board (TPB), in a joint effort with the Philippine Association of Convention/Exhibition Organizers and Suppliers Inc. (PACEOS) and the Department of Trade and Industry Board of Investments (DTI-BOI), crafted the ‘Meetings, Incentives, Conventions and Exhibitions (MICE) Roadmap 2030’. “The DOT stands by PACEOS in promoting the Philippines as a top MICE destination. The country’s successful hosting of big-ticket international events recently proved that we are on the right track,” said DOT Secretary, Wanda Tulfo-Teo. The ‘MICE Roadmap 2030’ was unveiled at the historic Philippine International Convention Center (PICC) Summit Halls with the goal of placing the country to the top 10 rankings in International Congress and Convention Association (ICCA). Teo assured PACEOS that the government fully supports its efforts to bring back the Philippines’ luster as an international event venue. “The Philippines ranked 8th worldwide and 1st in the Asian region in the annual listing of leading world convention destinations in 1982.  With this roadmap, we can reclaim our rightful place as a MICE powerhouse,” said DOT Undersecretary Benito Bengzon Jr. In the 2016 ICCA Statistic Report Country & City Rankings, the country placed 48th out of the 116 countries worldwide and 14th of 35 countries in the Asia Pacific and the Middle East regions in terms of having the most number of meetings.
