Technology metamorphosing business travel: FCM, KPMG report

GPS 2018 underway in Nagpur

The sixth edition of Global Panorama Showcase (GPS) is underway in Nagpur at the Centre Point Hotel. Around 956 registered attendees marked their presence at the inaugural event held on January 15, 2017. The first day saw presentations on products like Eurail by Amigo Travels, cyber security session by Prevoyance Cyberforensic, Genting Cruise Lines, FXkart, Travcare, Singapore Airlines, Sahibji Group, Mazda Travels, Red Tours, etc. A knowledge session was also held on Goods & Services Tax (GST) for the travel industry. GPS Nagpur will host 120 exhibitors for B2B meetings over the next two days.

Delhi to witness Adventure Sports Expo Asia from Jan 27-29


The first ever Adventure Sports Expo Asia is going to be held in New Delhi from January 27-29 at Four Points by Sheraton. Some 15000 visitors and sports enthusiasts are expected to attend the show. Suman Billa, Joint Secretary, Ministry of Tourism, informed that the government has declared 2018 as the Year of Adventure and the ministry is going all out to promote the country as an important hub for adventure tourism. Ajeet Bajaj, Senior Vice President, Adventure Tour Operators Association of India (ATOAI) and the Managing Director of Snow Leopard Adventures, said, “The mission behind the Expo is bringing together all stakeholders to make India an adventure powerhouse while keeping risk management, sustainability and responsible tourism at the forefront. ATOAI is the backbone as far this industry is concerned in India and our aim is to make India a global hub for adventure tourism. Internationally, the adventure sports industry is a $400 billion industry. According to industry estimates, the Indian inbound industry for adventure tourism in growing by 5-7 per cent annually and domestic tourism for this segment is on an upswing, growing by 20-25 per cent annually.” The expo will host many sessions addressing the various issues of the adventure sports industry with luminaries from across the globe. Malaysia Airlines joins hands with Penang Convention and Exhibition Bureau to enhance MICE

Malaysia Airlines Bhd (MAB) has inked a strategic partnership agreement with the Penang Convention and Exhibition Bureau (PCEB) to elevate the MICE industry of Malaysia. Yeoh Hock Thye, MAB Head of Sales, said “Through this strategic partnership, we will drive the traffic from our global network to Malaysia, especially into Penang and putting forward our MICE offering.” Currently, MAB flies 45 times weekly into Penang and is able to carry about 7,200 visitors per week. Penang Chief Minister, Lim Guan Eng stated that the business events segment was seeing a surge in the economic sector in Penang, contributing RM808 million to the economy in 2016. “Penang hosted 1,251 events in 2016 and for the first three quarters of last year, the state played host to 1,731 events with an estimated economic impact of RM900 million,” he added.

Karnataka International Travel Expo from Feb 28- March 2 in Bengaluru


The Karnataka International Travel Expo is scheduled to be held from February 28-March 2, 2018, at the Bangalore International Exhibition Centre (BIEC). This was announced by the state tourism department of Karnataka. The inaugural expo is the largest B2B travel event in India. This event is a suitable platform that will see a conglomeration of over 400 registered buyers and media from over 25 countries. Priyank Kharge, Minister for Tourism, IT & BT, Govt. of Karnataka, said “Karnataka is home to a large and exciting portfolio of globally acclaimed tourism products with UNESCO World Heritage Sites, splendid wildlife and resplendent nature, virgin beaches to adorn. ‘Karnataka International Travel Expo’, being held for the first time, will provide the impetus to the inbound travel and tourism and would enhance the marketing efforts of Karnataka Tourism to promote our destinations to the travel-trade from all over the world”. The event will also feature an exclusive Karnataka Pavilion: Destination Karnataka: “Karnataka with its diverse range of products is fast emerging as one of the most interesting and productive states for the travel-trade industry both for leisure and business travel,” said TK Anil Kumar, Secretary – Tourism, Government of Karnataka. The three-day event will attract over 1,000 delegates facilitating over 10,000 pre-matched appointments to bring together International Buyers and sellers for face-to-face meetings, education forums and networking. Florence to host four congresses in 2018


Florence is all set to host four new international congresses in 2018 and two more in 2019. It shall host the General Assembly of the European Spice Association which will be held in Firenze Fiera – Congress & Exhibition Centre. This event shall witness some 300 delegates from May 23-26, 2018. The event will take place in Italy for the first time and will be organised by the Florentine PCO Scaramuzzi Team, a Firenze Convention Bureau’s partner. The EMS Academy’s 4th International Symposium on Electro Stimulation too shall be held in Florence from May 25-26, 2018, after three consecutive editions in Madrid. The event will be organised by MCR Conference (FCB partner) at Convitto della Calza and some 200 delegates are expected. The next event in 2018 will be the Integra International 2018 Congress in October which will be organised in Italy for the first time by the PCO First Class. The conference will be expecting around 200 delegates. In October 2018, there will also be the TIES – Ecotourism and Sustainable Tourism Conference – ESTC. Hitex to expand its capacity for national events


The Hyderabad International Trade Expositions Limited (Hitex) is set to expand its capacity for ensuring more space for national events. In a recent meeting, the Hitex board has decided on immediate expansion of 10, 500 sq mt and a construction of a new exhibition-cum-convention hall with ancillary and support infrastructure to serve the growing market requirement. The new hall, with a proposed size of  8,080 sq mt and built-up area of 1.4 lakh sq ft, can be used for hosting national and international conferences and music concerts. For mid to long-term expansion, Hitex plans to add 20,000 to 40,000 sq mt.

Dubai Business Events showcases its offerings at IBTM World 2017

Dubai Business Events, showcased the city’s latest offerings and forthcoming events throughout 2018 at the IBTM World 2017 in Barcelona. The 2017 edition of IBTM World was attended by more than 3,000 exhibitors. Among the latest developments highlighted was the inaugural Dubai Association Conference, organised by the Dubai Association Centre, which is scheduled to take place from December 11-12, 2017, at the Dubai World Trade Centre. Dubai Business Events also promoted the city’s role as the host of the 57th Congress of the International Congress and Convention Association (ICCA), which will be held in Dubai from November 11-14,  2018. Dubai Business Events recently received a formal handover from this year’s host city, Prague. Issam Kazim, Chief Executive Officer of Dubai Corporation for Tourism and Commerce Marketing, said: “The business events industry plays a central role in our efforts to continue realising sustainable economic diversification, and events such as IBTM World are a crucial part of that drive. By showcasing the city’s unique business events offerings and exciting attractions to global audiences – in addition to some of our major activities on the horizon – we have had another successful exhibition in Barcelona.”

South Africa to unveil delegate-boosting plan to propel business events


South Africa’s deputy Minister of Tourism, Elizabeth Thabethe has announced a delegate-boosting plan to broaden the variety of tourism products and the country’s business events industry as well. The announcement was made at the recently-held IBTM World 2017. As part of the programme, the SANCB is spearheading a global delegate-boosting campaign, targeting members of the association conferences that are already confirmed to take place in South Africa over the next five years. The South African National Convention Bureau (SANCB), a business unit of South African Tourism emphasised that the country is “open for business and on an accelerated drive to increase our share of the global business events pie.” Thabethe explained that this drive entails bringing more high-value business events delegates to South Africa, aiding economic growth and sustaining much-needed jobs throughout the broader tourism economy. “To help achieve this tourism growth, the South African government has allocated R90m for a bidding support programme to enable South Africa to bid more aggressively for international association conferences, meetings, incentives and exhibitions over the next three years. This grant will give South Africa extra muscle to lobby for and attract big-ticket events,” added Thabethe. According to Thabethe, South Africa hosts about a million business delegates every year and that the local events industry sustains more than 250,000 jobs, directly and indirectly.
