India’s cruise tourism, MICE products identified as growth sectors at WTM London

Incredible India pavilion at World Travel Market London 2016 was inaugurated by Dr. Mahesh Sharma, Minister of Tourism and Culture (I/C), Government of India, along with Vinod Zutshi, Secretary-Tourism, Government of India, and Ashok Chandra Panda, Minister of State for Tourism & Culture, Government of Odisha. Sharma also launched the official website of Incredible India Global Tourism Mart, scheduled from Feb 1-4, 2017, in New Delhi. MOT has identified cruise tourism and MICE as two niche products available in India for 2017, said Zutshi. The e-Tourist Visa scheme which was introduced to 113 countries globally in August 2015 will be further promoted by India Tourism as a major incentive for travel in 2017.

ITS World Congress in Melbourne hosted 11,500 delegates from 70 countries

The 23rd World Congress on Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS) in Melbourne hosted almost 11,500 delegates from more than 70 countries. The five-day event from October 10-14, at Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre saw government round-tables, 14 demonstrations offering 5,000+ live experiences, 17 off-site technical tours, 22 parallel conference tracks featuring 600+ sessions, two public days and an extensive schools and university programme, its first-ever hackathon, a 20,000 square metre exhibition involving 300+ organisations and over 50 congress partner, according to Stephan Wurzinger, Regional Director – Association Relations, MCI Australia.

Kolkata, Chennai emerging as optimum cities for MICE facilities

Kolkata and Chennai have emerged as one of the few cities which offer suitable MICE offerings at a reasonable rate. Kolkata’s super-luxury hospitality space will add over 500 rooms in the super-deluxe category in the next three months. Currently , Oberoi Grand, Taj Bengal, ITC Sonar and Hyatt -together offer 917 rooms. The count will go up to 1,231, a 134 per cent jump over the current strength in the next 18 months. Ranju Alex, GM of JW Marriott Kolkata, said, “Kolkata, with its unique character and soul, is a significant addition to the MICE map globally.” Shift of MICE from Mumbai and Hyderabad to Chennai, owing to cheaper room rates, has spurred growth for the city.

Petrotech-2016, the 12th International Oil and Gas Conference and Exhibition will be organised by the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas at New Delhi from December 5-7, 2016. Petroleum and Natural Gas Secretary K.D. Tripathi said the expo is poised to be the most important energy event in India in compassing the entire gamut of the oil and gas industry, as well as related sectors such as alternative energy, engineering and technology. 5th International Buddhist Conclave begins in Varanasi-Sarnath from Oct 2-6

With a view to showcase and project the Buddhist heritage and pilgrim sites of India, the Ministry of Tourism has organised the 5th International Buddhist Conclave, from October 2-6, 2016, in Varanasi-Sarnath in collaboration with the state governments of Uttar Pradesh and Bihar. The conclave was inaugurated by Dr. Mahesh Sharma, Minister for Tourism & Culture on October 2, 2016, in New Delhi. Ministry of Tourism has received over 250 nominations from 38 countries for participation in the Conclave. This year’s conclave has ASEAN as a Guest of Honour partner and a large participation is expected from ASEAN countries which are also major source markets for India in general and the Buddhist Heritage sites in particular.

TICA, KMA team up to elevate MICE professionals

The Thailand Incentive and Convention Association (TICA) and the Korea MICE Association (KMA) signed a memorandum of understanding to collaborate on the education and training of MICE professionals and strengthening of business platforms for the development of the MICE industry in South Korea and Thailand. Eung Su Kim, president of the KMA, and Sumate Sudasna, president of TICA, said they would collaborate for the growth of the MICE industry in the two countries with the aim of contributing to their respective economies and the enhancement of international goodwill and cooperation. “This MoU allows both countries to leverage on our knowledge and experience to gain further insights in service excellence on an international level. Business events will continue to have a strong impact for any country, especially among Asia-Pacific countries,” said Kim.

JATA Tourism EXPO unveiled in Tokyo

The JATA Tourism EXPO Japan officially opened with 140 countries and 47 regions in Japan. Delegates including Japan’s Minister of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism, Akihiro Ohta, and the Commissioner of the Japan Tourism Agency, Norifumi Idee were welcomed at the inaugural event. Ohta said that Japan wants to become an advanced tourism country, to push not only international inbound travel, but to also focus on more domestic travel as well. UNWTO Secretary-General Dr. Taleb Rifai, and David Scowsill, President and CEO, World Travel and Tourism Council (WTTC) also graced the occasion with their presence. Rifai stated that Japan’s ambitious target of recording 40 million annual visitors by the year 2020 – the original goal was 20 million, was achieved last year and first upped to 30 million before the current target was proposed.

Thailand MICE garners 60.5bn baht in first fiscal

Thailand had welcomed 750,742 MICE travellers, generating 60.593 billion baht MICE revenue during the first three quarters of the 2016 fiscal year. A total of 393,859 visitors, and 29.664 billion baht were from the meetings and incentives sector. The top 3 MI markets for visitors were India, China, and Singapore. Nopparat Maythaveekulchai, President of TCEB said, “The results of a study on economic impact in 2015 show that the Thai MICE industry helped generate total expenditure of 220 billion baht for the country’s economy, while generating 164,427 jobs, and benefiting industry networking, as well as building our brand and capabilities.”
