Global Exhibitions Day: 85 countries participate

Exhibition professionals around the world came out in record numbers for the third Global Exhibitions Day (GED) that was held on June 6. This highlights the industry’s role as a driver of economic growth with 85 countries taking part, reveals UFI, the Global Association of the Exhibition Industry data. Corrado Peraboni, President, UFI, said, “I am pleased to see the prominent support from ministers in national governments who shared their understanding of how important exhibitions and business events are for their economies and citizens.” GED’s focus this year were on two key areas: to advocate industry issues with politicians and stakeholders, and finding new ways to connect with young people to attract the right talent to the exhibition industry. The UFI team in Paris had registered activities in 85 countries and regions from all around the world, with the leading organisers, venues and service providers all being active. Coordinated by UFI, this joint advocacy campaign also united 41 GED partner associations. Activities in all parts of the world saw a broad mix of activities, both on-site and online, promoting exhibitions as business platforms, as well as highlighting opportunities for career and business development. Specific events and activities were arranged by many of the international and national organisers, by venues, by service providers, and also by national and regional associations. Here is an example of the many activities that focused on education and networking globally: In Asia, activities were reported at many venues in China, whilst in Thailand, the TCEB ran an “Exhibition Industry Forum” focusing on the theme of change. Newly-opened Holiday Inn Resort Kolkata NH6 to cater to MICE

InterContinental Hotels Group (IHG) has announced a partnership with SDB Developers to bring a second Holiday Inn hotel to Kolkata. As part of the agreement, the 110-room Holiday Inn Resort Kolkata NH6 will have 90 rooms operational by the end of 2018, with 20 additional rooms expected to be operational by 2020. MOT’s Global Travel Mart in Sep, 2018

Ministry of tourism is set to organise its Global Travel Mart from September 18-20, 2018 in association with Federation of Associations of Indian Travel and Hospitality (FAITH). Rashmi Verma, Secretary, Ministry of Tourism, Government of India, said, “We are taking a number of new initiatives. For a long time, it was the demand of the industry that we should also have a Global Travel Mart in our country on the lines of WTM and ITB, and this year we have finalised the mart in partnership with the industry. MOT will be organising this Global Travel Mart from September 18-20 in Delhi and we will be getting participants from all over the world and about 200-250 foreign delegates and media will be participating in it. The entire travel trade industry will be partners in this and their apex organisation FAITH will be doing it with us in partnership. This new initiative would give opportunity to the entire travel trade and will give a lot of fillip to the tourist traffic to India.

120 Indians participate in IMWF, Turkey

300 attendees from over 55 countries are attending the International MICE & Wedding Forum taking place in Antalya, Turkey from May 28-June 1. India is represented by a strong contingent of 120 participants. International Buddhist Conclave from Aug 26-28: MOT

The Ministry of Tourism is increasingly focusing on promoting Buddhist tourism, for which not only are they working on promotion, but also infrastructure development. MOT recently concluded a roadshow to a few ASEAN countries, and is all set to organise the International Buddhist Conclave in August. Rashmi Verma, Secretary, Ministry of Tourism, Government of India, said, “Buddhist Tourism is our priority area and in line with the same, we just concluded a roadshow in four countries–Myanmar, Vietnam, Cambodia and Thailand. We saw a lot of interest in people from these countries for coming to India and visiting these sites. We are also organising the International Budddhist Conclave from August 26-28, in which we will have business meetings and will also be inviting prominent monks from these countries. The inauguration will be held at Vigyan Bhawan in New Delhi, and then by charter flights we will take all the delegates to Ajanta and Ellora caves. This is the first time we will be showcasing other sites related to Buddhism. From there, we will be take them to Bodhgaya and Sarnath. With this, we are hopeful that after this, the delegates would be able to see the improved infrastructure at these sites, which will encourage them to make visits to our country.”

Thailand to be the host country for 2018 IIFA Awards

The Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) announced that Thailand has been named as the host country for the 19th International Indian Film Academy Awards (IIFA Awards), which is scheduled to be held in Bangkok from June 22-24, 2018. This makes the second time the Thai capital plays host to the biggest celebration of Indian cinema, having hosted the 9th IIFA Awards on 8 June, 2008. Yuthasak Supasorn, TAT Governor, said, “India is one of Thailand’s important sources of visitor markets. Being named as the host country for the glitzy and glamorous IIFA Awards for the second time reiterates Thailand’s positioning as the preferred destination among Indian travellers.” Wizcraft International, the producers and creators of the IIFA, made the official announcement at a press conference held in New Delhi on May 17, 2018. Making the appearances to confirm Bangkok as the host city for this June’s star-studded weekend included Bollywood bigwigs Ranbir Kapoor, Karan Johar, Dia Mirza, Shahid Kapoor and Kartik Aaryan.

ICPB’s 11th CIC to be held in Kolkata from August 29-31

India Convention Promotion Bureau (ICPB) has announced the dates for its 11th Conventions India Conclave (CIC) 2018. The convention will be held at Biswa Bangla Convention Centre, Kolkata, from August 29-31, 2018. Some 300 participants are expected to attend the Conclave including 150 domestic and 40 international potential buyers. International MICE & Wedding Forum to begin from May 28-June 1 in Antalya, Turkey

The third edition of the International MICE & Wedding Forum (IMWF) is set to kick off from May 28 – June 1 in Antalya, Turkey, at the Titanic Deluxe Golf Belek Hotel. The biggest players in the fields of MICE and Wedding planners will meet with over 450 agencies from 70 different countries, as well as with industry suppliers and managers from over 150 hotels and airlines. Sabbas Joseph, Director of Wizcraft International Entertainment, will be honorary guest and keynote speaker at the IMFW.
