Aahar 2018 underway at Pragati Maidan, Delhi

The 33rd edition of Aahar, the International Food & Hospitality Fair, New Delhi, organised by India Trade Promotion Organisation, is underway at Pragati Maidan. Suresh Prabhakar Prabhu, Minister of Commerce & Industry and Civil Aviation of India, inaugurated the fair. The India Trade Promotion Organisation (ITPO), with the support of the Ministry of Food Processing Industries, Agricultural, and Processed Food Products Development Authority (APEDA) and other industry bodies, are the organisers of the event, which will be underway until March 17, 2018, at Hall 7 of Pragati Maidan in New Delhi. Over 900 exhibitors from India and overseas will be exhibiting a wide range of food products, machinery, and equipment. Prabhu at the inaugural address said, ”Food is a very important part of Indian culture and has been a great attraction for the people who visit our country. Every state in our country has different cuisine. Over a period of time, we have started processing food and this is a great transition. India is the largest producer of milk and the second largest producer of fruits and vegetables. Therefore, all this food which is produced is creating a value chain, supply chain, thus adding to the real economic opportunities. This is just a beginning. I don’t think we have even touched the surface of the opportunities that lies in our country and therefore I am happy, that is exactly what has been showcased at Aahar.” The foreign participation is from 18 countries including USA, China, Italy, Poland, Turkey, Spain, Oman, South Korea, Thailand, UAE, Peru, Norway, Indonesia, Canada, Tunisia, Hong Kong, Singapore, and Japan.

SITE launches SITE India Young Leader programme

SITE (Society for Incentive Travel Excellence) has launched the SITE India Young Leaders programme in India. The programme was unveiled at the Young Leader Coffee Meet Up at Ethiopian Cultural Centre, New Delhi on March 9, 2018. Leaders of today from different quarters of the travel and hospitality industry were in attendance of the event. The programme aims to be the ticket to myriad opportunities open for prospective leaders below the age of 35, with less than five years of experience in the industry and connect with 2,000 members of SITE spread across 88 countries. Speaking at the event, Nitin Sachdeva, co-Chair for Global Young Leader programme of SITE, said, “The SITE Young Leaders programme builds the next generation of incentive travel leaders by providing education and networking opportunities appealing directly to younger generations. The mission is to focus on bridging the gap between generations and creating a strong group of individuals who will become SITE leaders. This will help them connect to 2,000 members of SITE spread across 88 countries.”

India wins honour of ‘Best Exhibitor’ at ITB Berlin

India has won the award for ‘Best Exhibitor Award’ at ITB Berlin. The country was represented by the Minister of State (Independent charge) for Tourism, K. J. Alphons along with tourism ministry officials. India’s Incredible India (Ministry of Tourism) presented a short film named “Yogi of the Racetrack ” in the meet. The short film reportedly garnered 3.2 million hits in 60 hours. The ITB- Berlin World Tourist Meet was convened at Berlin, Germany from March 7-10, 2018. More than 100 countries had participated in the ITB- Berlin meet with their respective tourism ministers.

Hyatt Regency Pune has made the latest addition to its portfolio, a contemporary events space called EQ:IQ, touted as the largest events space in the city with 19,000 sq.ft. It has meeting rooms equipped with cutting-edge technology, a personalised concierge for events and breakout zones with themed tea/coffee breaks and high-end service ware. The new space has three zones, one each for events, dining and recreation. For events, it offers four halls. The capacity of the entire new space is 240 pax in cluster seating, 500 pax in theater style and 1,500 pax in floating crowd. ITB Berlin 2018 kicks off

The Indian delegation, led by KJ Alphons, Minister of State (I/C) for Tourism, Govt. of  India, highlighted the  country’s tremendous tourism potential at the 52nd edition of ITB Berlin which kicked off at the Messe Berlin fairgrounds. The three day event will go on until March 11, 2018. Addressing the media, Alphons spoke about the country’s 5000 year-old civilisation, beautiful beaches, backwaters, desserts, coastline, Himalayas, and immense possibilities for millennials who are looking for adventure. The minister also apprised the audience about the growing yoga and ayurveda related activities and centres in the country, exploring the North East and the great potential of religious tourism, with emphasis on Buddhist tourism. “In terms of general numbers, India has done considerably well last year. 2017 was fantastic! We recorded 15.6 per cent, when the global numbers went up by 5 per cent. Our international tourists arrivals were 16.5 million last year. Are we happy with the numbers? No. We have so much to offer and we want to double the numbers in three years or less, double the revenues in three years or less. India’s tourism contributes about 8 per cent to the GDP of India. We have 14 million people employed in the tourism industry,” Alphons said. In terms of domestic tourism, close to 24 million Indians travelled last year. “In 2017, 1.8 million trips were made by Indians within the country and which will go up to 2 million in 2018 and we want this number to increase dramtically, its not just about international arrivals but also Indians visting India,” he said. West Bengal lays focus on adventure and homestay tourism policy

West Bengal tourism department is currently focusing on homestay tourism policy and has also started promoting adventure tourism in different destinations of the state, said Gautam Deb, Tourism Minister, Government of West Bengal, on the sidelines of the Bengal Travel Mart (BTM) in Siliguri. Deb inaugurated the third edition of BTM along with Bratya Basu, Information Technology Minister, Government of West Bengal, and James Kujur, Tribal Development Minister, Government of West Bengal. The three-day travel mart was attended by buyers and sellers from across the country and abroad to establish partnership. The event was organised by Eastern Himalaya Travel and Tour Operators Association  (EHTTOA) in association with North Bengal Development Department and West Bengal Tourism. “Bengal has immense potential. We are currently working to develop each sector of tourism in the state – from forest to hills to coastal areas. We are also preparing our integrated tourism policy along with homestay and adventure tourism policies,” he said. Deb also pointed out that the Bagdogra airport’s instrument landing system (ILS) will start operating from March 29, as per an AAI notification. He informed that in the previous year, the passenger growth at the airport touched 22 lakh.
