Oman to host UNWTO/UNESCO conference in December

The Sultanate of Oman is getting to host the second UNWTO/UNESCO Culture & Tourism Conference from December 11-12, 2017 at the new Oman Convention & Exhibition Centre in Muscat. The conference will bring together ministers of tourism and culture of different countries to identify key opportunities and obstacles for a stronger cooperation between tourism and culture, and to discuss sustainable development that strengthen the socio-economic links, reinforce mutual engagement in the promotion, protection and safeguarding of culture and heritage. The Omani government will be providing a free Oman visa to participants who wish to attend this conference. The United Nations has declared 2017 as the International Year of Sustainable Tourism for Development hence keeping in line with the theme the conference will revolve around sustainable development that strengthens the socio-economic links, reinforce mutual engagement in the promotion, protection and safeguarding of culture and heritage. The first edition of this conference was held in Cambodia in 2015.

Dubai Association Conference in December

The Dubai Association Conference will be held from December 11-12, 2017 at the Dubai World Trade Centre (DWTC). The conference will focus on building the association community, skills development and sharing best practices. Themed ‘Building a Community’, the Dubai Association Conference is being hosted by the Dubai Association Centre (DAC), a joint initiative of the Dubai Chamber of Commerce and Industry, the Dubai Department of Tourism and Commerce Marketing (DTCM) and DWTC.  With the number of associations steadily growing across the Middle East region, the conference will aim to offer a vital platform for networking and knowledge-sharing, in an effort to further boost progression across industries. Issam Kazim, Chief Executive Officer of Dubai Corporation for Tourism and Commerce Marketing, said: “Dubai Association Conference is a step towards fostering a collaborative environment for associations to expand and thrive. WTM London 2017 concludes successfully

The final day of WTM London 2017 concluded with WTM Festivals, allowing visitors to experience the culture, hospitality and cuisine of the Caribbean, Tokyo, Indonesia, Ecuador, Bulgaria, Ghana, Senegal and Brazil. Pertinent issues such as Brexit, overtourism and development were debated among the tourism ministers’ agenda. The annual UNWTO and WTM Ministers Summit debated strategies to cope with overtourism, which is threatening the tourism trade in destinations such as Barcelona, Venice and Amsterdam. Taleb Rifai, Secretary General, UNWTO, said there have been many protests against overtourism in 2017, with slogans such as “tourists go home” and “tourists are terrorists.” He warned, “We cannot continue to build five-star hotels in three-star communities. We need to diversify visitors’ activities, reduce seasonality and raise awareness of less busy destinations.” WTM brought together the leadership of the International Hotel Investment Forum and WTM London’s expertise to create an exclusive platform for ministers and investors in travel destination development. Keith Evans, Vice President Hotels, Starwood Capital, highlighted Greece’s potential, “There’s a good strong fundamental tour infrastructure; Greece is setting itself up as a market that has an interesting few years ahead.”

AccorHotels’ twin property opens in Chennai

AccorHotels has announced the opening of Novotel and ibis OMR Chennai. Being termed as the first combo property in Chennai, the hotel has the advantage of being strategically located in the centre of the IT Expressway (OMR). The 342 (combined) room property is AccorHotels’ first joint development in the city. Featuring midscale and economy brands under the same complex, the 153- room Novotel and 189-room ibis Chennai OMR gives travellers a choice of offerings across different price points. ACE of MICE to be held in Turkey in February, 2018

The fifth ACE of MICE exhibition is going to be held in Istanbul, Turkey, from February 21-23, 2018. Organised by  Turkish Airlines in Turkey, it is the third largest congress of meeting and events exhibition in the world. The city of Istanbul will once again become the focus of the international MICE industry. The event will be held at Istanbul Congress Center with the motto of previous year ‘MICE industry convenes with all of its colours!’ Held every year by the Tourism Media Group organisation, the exhibition will see 746 hosted buyers from 39 countries flock to the city. Over 9,791 business to business (B2B) meetings have been arranged, along with 220 national and international exhibitors, 19 sessions, 35 speakers, 160 sponsors at the event. Over 15,000 domestic and foreign visitors are expected to witness the event. According to the International Congress and Convention Association (ICCA), Turkey is among the top ten of the world’s meeting destinations. The country ranks 18th globally as a growing destination for MICE tourism. Turkey is exceptionally well positioned as a destination for the MICE industry, both in terms of trade and culture.

Madhya Pradesh Travel Mart showcases MP’s myriad offerings

The fourth edition of Madhya Pradesh Travel Mart (MPTM) was held from October 27-29 at Hotel Lake View, Bhopal. Over 200 national and international buyers and close to 100 domestic exhibitors took part in the event. With B2B sessions scheduled over two days, participants had the opportunity to form successful collaborations and network with industry players including airlines, accommodation providers, destination management companies, heritage hotels, wildlife resorts, etc. Surendra Patwa, Minister of Tourism, Government of MP, said, “I believe that within a year or two, our team will be at the international level. Security for foreign tourists is one of our biggest priorities and we are continuously ensuring that tourists feel safe and welcome when they travel to the state.”

Department of Tourism (DOT), Philippines, along with its prominent travel partners from the destination successfully conducted PHILINDEX 2017 in Hyderabad (October 23), Jaipur (October 24), Chandigarh (October 25) and will conclude in Lucknow on October 27. These roadshows are in line with the destination’s continued efforts to sensitise the Indian markets, especially those of the Tier-II and Tier-III portfolios. Led by Glen Agustin, Officer-in-Charge, Office of Product and Market Development, DOT, Philippines, this was the largest delegation from the destination to have visited India in recent times and apart from tourism board officials and prominent tour operators, it also included delegates from Singapore Airlines, Philippines Airlines, Cathay Pacific Airlines, Shroff International Travel Care Inc., etc. Talking about the tourism figures from the Indian market at the roadshow in Chandigarh, Glen revealed, “We are very excited to see an average annual growth of 20-22 per cent from the Indian market and are looking to cross the 100,000 milestone by the end of this calendar year. Our team has identified four feeder markets namely Hyderabad, Jaipur, Chandigarh and Lucknow where we see a huge potential to educate and subsequently gain a lot of business through the agents of these regions.’’ The interactive event also saw two regional directors of Philippines in attendance from Mimaropa and Bicol respectively, to inform the agents of the various offerings and opportunities that their region presents to the Indian market. ITB Asia 2017 underway in Singapore

ITB Asia 2017 is underway  at the Sands Expo and Convention Centre in Marina Bay Sands, Singapore. Over 940 exhibitors from 951 buyers from MICE, corporate, leisure and other sectors with over 11,000 delegates are attending the event. The programme features its strongest line-up of exhibitors and speakers, as well as many firsts for the travel trade show. While African and Russian markets make a strong showing at this year’s show, North Asia features prominently with a strong showing by Japan and South Korea. Running parallel with the exhibition, the conference programme looks into ‘The Future of Travel’. The three-day conference presents an extensive programme of presentations and discussions. Singapore maintains top destination for business events tag

Cementing Singapore’s position as one of the world’s top business events destination, the city has successfully secured eight large congresses and trade-shows that are estimated to bring in an additional 20,000 visitors  in the coming years. Singapore has also secured various significant trade-shows for 2018. Over the past year, Singapore won bids to host five major world congresses. Three prominent medical congresses will take place for the first time in Southeast Asia – the International Urogynecological Association (IUGA) Annual Meeting in 2021, which will attract 1,200 visiting physicians and healthcare professionals; the 20th International Congress of Endocrinology (ICE) in 2022 which will gather more than 4,000 endocrinologists from over 70 countries; and the World Congress of Anaesthesiologists (WCA) in 2024 that will welcome 8,000 anaesthesiologists, and more.   The year 2017 saw Singapore maintain its international standing as the leading business events destination in Asia Pacific and being crowned 2016’s top international association meetings city in Asia-Pacific and Middle East by the International Congress and Convention Association (ICCA). The city was named the second ‘Top International Meeting City’ of 2016 by the Union of International Associations (UIA).
