Derek Sharp appointed as the MD of CWT Meetings & Events

Carlson Wagonlit Travel, the global travel management company, has appointed Derek Sharp as Managing Director of CWT Meetings & Events. Effective 1 November 2018, Derek will be based in London, report to Kelly Kuhn, Chief Customer Officer of CWT and serve as a member of CWT’s Customer Organization Leadership Team. “Derek’s success in strategy, sales, P&L management and business development will bring an additional level of dynamism to our Meetings and Events business. In addition, his extensive experience in the global travel industry will provide a unique perspective on how to further grow this critical component of CWT’s worldwide portfolio,” said Kelly Kuhn. “I am absolutely delighted to welcome Derek to our team.” Immediately prior to his appointment, Derek was SVP and Managing Director of Travelport’s Air Commerce line of business focusing on airline and rail distribution as well as airline IT solutions. He has previously held senior management, strategy and consulting positions with HP Enterprise Services, EDS, UPS and Bain & Company. An American national who has lived in the Americas, Asia and Europe, Derek holds an MBA from the Tuck School of Business at Dartmouth College and a BA in Political Science from Texas A&M University

ITB Asia 2018 finishes on a high with record-breaking numbers

ITB Asia,  wrapped up on a high as the annual event achieved record-breaking numbers. Held at the Sands Expo and Convention Centre in Marina Bay Sands, Singapore between 17 – 19 October 2018, the three-day conference and exhibition recorded an impressive 25,000 business appointments this year. Having hosted more than 1,000 exhibitors and over 1,000 buyers this year, ITB Asia 2018 had also recorded an increase of 8.9 per cent of total visitors representing more than 127 countries from last year’s anniversary event. This year, ITB Asia 2018 welcomed new exhibitors as it unveiled its largest exhibitor showcase yet. This included Abu Dhabi, Botswana, Canton Sarajevo, Croatia, Fukuoka, Kansai, Mauritius, Mexico, Papua New Guinea, Poland, Rovaniemi, Slovakia and Ukraine among many others. NIMA Convention from January 20-25, 2019

The annual convention of Network of Indian MICE Agents (NIMA) is set to be held in Taipei, Taiwan from January 20-25, 2019, informed Gajesh Girdhar, National Coordinator, NIMA. A destination showcase is also slated to be held in 2019 but the destination is yet to be finalised. NIMA, a four-and-half-years old association, is a network of MiCE agents. “We currently have 136 numbers with a majority from Tier-II, III cities. With zero membership fee, we have always focused on tapping new markets. For instance, in Spain, everybody has their eyes on Barcelona, Madrid and Apjiza, while we tap the Catalonia region where we had our first convention in 2016. So, now people are aware of Catalonia and all the members are promoting it,” explained Girdhar.

Dubai Business Events roadshows project opportunities to Indian planners

Dubai Business Events (DBE) has showcased the city’s capabilities and services to business event planners through their three-city roadshow held recently in Mumbai, Delhi and Bengaluru, attracting an attendance of approximately 490 business events and incentive buyers as well as wedding planners. DBE was joined on the roadshow by a number of stakeholders from Dubai, including Dubai Parks and Resorts, Jumeirah Hotels and Emaar Hospitality. The roadshow offered a platform for the DBE team to meet and engage with key decision makers, educate them about the services available to them, and detail how the convention bureau can support in planning their events in Dubai. Attendees were also able to discover Dubai and the world-class factors that combine to make the city a premier destination to host business events. Over the coming months, DBE and stakeholders from the city will conduct further in-market activities in UK, Sweden, Finland and Russia while also continuing to welcome business event planners for study missions from around the world to Dubai.

India, third largest APAC market, growing at 12% YOY: GBTA

Discussing best practices across the business travel lifecycle, Global Business Travel Association (GBTA) Conference 2018, held at Hotel Pullman New Delhi Aerocity recently showcased projections of the Indian market. Gaurav Sundaram, Regional Director, GBTA India, said, “Compared to 2017, in 2018, India is together the seventh largest global market with $38 billion. It is the third largest APAC market with 12 per cent YOY. This is the best time for business professionals. However, these are also times of VUCA, that is, volatility, uncertainty, change and ambiguity. There is a huge disruption potential and inertia by travel business.” The event includes a CXO round-table on creating scalable global travel programmes as well as education sessions on the impact of payment solutions on business travel and duty of care within Indian companies. The forum will feature a trade show highlighting the best-class solution providers within the business travel industry. “With India expected to become the sixth largest business market in the world by the end of 2019, GBTA felt it was crucial to host a series of conferences within this region,” said Sundaram. “Each conference will be unique in its offerings of education sessions, speakers and content and will ultimately help educate the market on global best practices.”

3k delegates attend IT&CMA and CTW Asia-Pacific 2018

Thailand Convention and Exhibitions Bureau (TCEB) has announced new brand marketing communication campaign, ‘Thailand: Redefine Your Business Events’. Through the campaign, TCEB aims to tap into the growing opportunities from the country’s economic development landscape and the expansion of Asia market, while  promoting Thailand as a hub of ASEAN MiCE. Nichapa Yoswee, Senior Vice, President, TCEB, said that Asia has been a fast-growing market for Thailand’s MiCE industry supported by remarkable growth rates of MiCE travellers from ASEAN and CLMV countries which increased 35 and 100 per cent respectively. In addition, Asia is predicted to be a primary source market for the Meeting & Incentives sector in 2019 powered by a rising trend of corporate travels in China, and the growth of travellers from India and Indonesia which are predicted at 11.3 and 8.7 per cent respectively. However, the global MiCE market is changing with influences from social and technological developments. The upcoming trends are: an increasing focus on MiCE activities that enhance active learning, and abilities to broaden fresh perspective and being adaptive; a development of online applications which assist event organisers to manage the show and enhance delegate’s engagement, and a rising numbers of shows from new sectors such as Health and Wellness, Robotic Innovations and Start-up. India Tourism Mart underway in Delhi

The maiden India Tourism Mart (ITM), organised by the Ministry of Tourism, along with Federation of Associations in Tourism and Hospitality (FAITH), is underway until September 18, 2018,  at The Ashok, New Delhi. The mart was formally inaugurated by Piyush Goyal, Union Minister for Railways, Coal and Corporate Affairs, in the presence of KJ Alphons, Minister of State (I/C), Ministry of Tourism. The event witnessed presence of 250 delegates from 60 countries, who also attended the Paryatan Parv at the Rajpath Lawns. The buyers were welcomed at The Ashok by Nakul Anand, Chairman, FAITH, who met with all the presidents of associations under the FAITH umbrella, as well as the exhibitors. ITM will give an opportunity to the buyers to see world-class tourism facilities available in the country such as airports, hotels, tourist destinations, MiCE facilities, potential in the field of adventure tourism and other niche products.

PATA Travel Mart (PTM) 2018, held from September 12-14  at Mahsuri International Exhibition Centre in Langkawi, Malaysia, opened to more than 1400 delegates. Addressing them, Mario Hardy, Chief Executive Officer, PATA, said, “PATA Travel Mart continues to stand tall in the Asia Pacific as the most value-adding network. The event’s continued success is due to its ability to strike the right balance between quality and quantity when it comes to buyer and seller appointments.
