TCEB unveils two mobile apps for events

Thailand Convention and Exhibition Bureau has launched two new mobile applications, Smart BIZ Event and Smart BIZ Organizer for Thailand’s MICE industry. Through its unique innovation, the strategy is aimed to stimulate the growth of MICE events in the country, attract MICE travellers, and establish a knowledge and statistics platform to support the industry in terms of the strategic planning. Chiruit Isarangkun Na Ayuthaya, President, TCEB, said, “TCEB’s strategy focuses on the development of innovations. We aim to catch up with the digital trend and respond to the demand of MICE organisers and travellers in the digital era. In the fiscal year 2017, the target markets show a great response to our activities which include the development of our website, online sales and marketing channels, as well as online marketing communications.” TCEB also developed a mobile application called ‘Biz Thailand’, to respond to the rising trend of smartphones. The app provides information in Thai and English languages. It helps in giving out details about tourist attractions, restaurants, accommodations, domestic and international flights, as well as data on MICE venues in Bangkok and MICE cities. Users are able to get real-time updates on news and promotion activities with the location-based service. Besides, users are able to link the app to their social media accounts which makes sharing information found in the app worth their network easier. This useful application is designed for the users who are interested in conventions and business events in Thailand. Until now, the app has a record of more than 6,000 downloads.

South Korea wins bid to host 15,000 delegates

South Korea has won the bid to host the next International Diabetes Federation (IDF) Congress, which is expected to welcome 10,000 foreign participants.  The IDF congress is the largest academic fair related to diabetes in the world, and up to 15,000 people are expected to attend the event, which is scheduled to be held at the Busan Exhibition & Convention Center from December 2-6, 2019. Korea Tourism Organization, along with Busan Metropolitan City, Busan Tourism Organization, and the Korean Diabetes Association together formed the bidding committee that made the announcement of the bid win on December 7 from the IDF Congress 2017 in Abu Dhabi. Preparation for the successful bid win was a process several years in the making. Korea Tourism Organization began its efforts in 2013, and submitted a bid proposal to the IDF last year.  They also assisted with site inspections of Busan by IDF delegates. Korea Tourism Organisation Vice-President of International Tourism, Min Min-hong, said, “We hope this bid win has a positive impact on the minds of event planners, and helps to continue to grow confidence in our meetings industry.” Despite the media’s portrayal of Korea’s national security, the country continues to be a popular destination for international events.  Recent statistics by the Union of International Associations ranked Korea first for the hosting of international events in 2016, further proving the resilience of Korea’s meetings industry. The Korean government has long since recognized its meetings industry as a key economic driver for growth. The upcoming 2019 IDF Congress is expected to incur 63.7 billion won (US$58.29 million) worth of production and create some 660 new jobs. The National Capital Region shall witness the 5th Global Hospitality Conclave (GHC) at The Leela Ambience Gurgaon on January 6, 2018. The conclave, an independent initiative by the alumni of the erstwhile Oberoi School of Hotel Management (OSHM), now The Oberoi Centre for Learning & Development (OCLD), brings together a host of industry leaders to discuss the trends and developments in the hospitality, travel & aviation industry. Dubai Association Conference aims to boost progression across industries

The Dubai Association Conference hosted by the Dubai Association Centre (DAC), a joint initiative of the Dubai Chamber of Commerce and Industry, the Dubai Department of Tourism and Commerce Marketing (DTCM) and Dubai World Trade Centre (DWTC) is underway and shall be held until December 12, 2017, at Dubai World Trade Centre. It is being held under the patronage of His Highness Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai and Chairman of Dubai Executive Council. In the opening session, His Excellency Helal Al Marri, Director General of Dubai’s Department of Tourism and Commerce Marketing and Dubai World Trade Centre, and His Excellency Hamad Buamim, President and Chief Executive Officer of Dubai Chamber of Commerce and Industry, discussed their vision for growing the association market community in Dubai and the wider Middle East region. The conference’s two-day programme focuses on building the association community, skills development for association executives and sharing best practices from around the world. Dubai Business Events showcases its offerings at IBTM World 2017

Dubai Business Events, showcased the city’s latest offerings and forthcoming events throughout 2018 at the IBTM World 2017 in Barcelona. The 2017 edition of IBTM World was attended by more than 3,000 exhibitors. Among the latest developments highlighted was the inaugural Dubai Association Conference, organised by the Dubai Association Centre, which is scheduled to take place from December 11-12, 2017, at the Dubai World Trade Centre. Dubai Business Events also promoted the city’s role as the host of the 57th Congress of the International Congress and Convention Association (ICCA), which will be held in Dubai from November 11-14,  2018. Dubai Business Events recently received a formal handover from this year’s host city, Prague. Issam Kazim, Chief Executive Officer of Dubai Corporation for Tourism and Commerce Marketing, said: “The business events industry plays a central role in our efforts to continue realising sustainable economic diversification, and events such as IBTM World are a crucial part of that drive. By showcasing the city’s unique business events offerings and exciting attractions to global audiences – in addition to some of our major activities on the horizon – we have had another successful exhibition in Barcelona.”

South Africa to unveil delegate-boosting plan to propel business events

South Africa’s deputy Minister of Tourism, Elizabeth Thabethe has announced a delegate-boosting plan to broaden the variety of tourism products and the country’s business events industry as well. The announcement was made at the recently-held IBTM World 2017. As part of the programme, the SANCB is spearheading a global delegate-boosting campaign, targeting members of the association conferences that are already confirmed to take place in South Africa over the next five years. The South African National Convention Bureau (SANCB), a business unit of South African Tourism emphasised that the country is “open for business and on an accelerated drive to increase our share of the global business events pie.” Thabethe explained that this drive entails bringing more high-value business events delegates to South Africa, aiding economic growth and sustaining much-needed jobs throughout the broader tourism economy. “To help achieve this tourism growth, the South African government has allocated R90m for a bidding support programme to enable South Africa to bid more aggressively for international association conferences, meetings, incentives and exhibitions over the next three years. This grant will give South Africa extra muscle to lobby for and attract big-ticket events,” added Thabethe. According to Thabethe, South Africa hosts about a million business delegates every year and that the local events industry sustains more than 250,000 jobs, directly and indirectly.

2nd edition of the Travel Business Show kicks off in Gurugram

The 2nd edition of the Travel Business Show, an exclusive MICE event, was held from December 2 –3, 2017, at the Le Meridien Gurgaon. The show was inaugurated by Ma. Teresita C. Daza, Ambassador of Philippines to India, who was also the Chief Guest of the evening. Tourism and MICE continues to be a great contributor to the economy of nations, Daza said. “In 2016, the Philippines economy grew by 6.8 per cent, faster than 5.9 per cent expansion in 2015.  In the third quarter of 2017, it grew by 6.9 per cent. Travel and tourism are important contributing factors for the economy. The sector contributed about 8.6 per cent to the country’s GDP in 2016. The top source markets for the Philippines from Asia include China, Japan, South Korea and Taiwan.  Currently, India ranks as the 12th largest source market for the Philippines. Many Indians visit Manila, Cebu, Palawan, Angeles and Boracay,” she informed. Giving an insight in the popularity of the Philippines as a destination for Indians, she added, “In 2016, the record of Indian arrivals in the Philippines was 90,000, which is an average of about 246 Indian passengers per day.  This number of Indian arrivals is very encouraging, despite visa requirements for Indians travelling to the Philippines.” Giving a synopsis of mega MICE events in the Philippines, she said, “Aside from leisure travel, the Philippines has also been witnessing an immense contribution of  the Meetings, Incentives, Conferences and Events (MICE) segment into the growth of the Philippines tourism industry. 6th International Tourism Mart in Guwahati

International Tourism Mart (ITM)  shall be held from December 5-7, 2017, in Guwahati, Assam.  The Ministry of Tourism in association with the North Eastern States is set to organise the mart at the Taj Vivanta. The mart will be inaugurated by Jagdish Mukhi, Governor of Assam in the presence of Sarbananda Sonowal, Chief Minister, Assam and K J Alphons, Minister of State (I/C) for Tourism, along with other dignitaries from Central Ministries and North Eastern States. The 6th ITM will focus on India’s ‘Act East Policy’, blossoming ties with ASEAN and the larger East Asia region. Besides deliberations on promotion of tourism in the North East Region, the panel discussions will also lay emphasis on promoting cultural ties, strengthening contact with countries in the ASEAN region and providing enhanced connectivity to the North Eastern states. The ITM 2017 will also see an active participation by the Ministry of DONER to synergise the process of development of tourism in the North East region.
