6th International Tourism Mart in Guwahati

International Tourism Mart (ITM)  shall be held from December 5-7, 2017, in Guwahati, Assam.  The Ministry of Tourism in association with the North Eastern States is set to organise the mart at the Taj Vivanta. The mart will be inaugurated by Jagdish Mukhi, Governor of Assam in the presence of Sarbananda Sonowal, Chief Minister, Assam and K J Alphons, Minister of State (I/C) for Tourism, along with other dignitaries from Central Ministries and North Eastern States. The 6th ITM will focus on India’s ‘Act East Policy’, blossoming ties with ASEAN and the larger East Asia region. Besides deliberations on promotion of tourism in the North East Region, the panel discussions will also lay emphasis on promoting cultural ties, strengthening contact with countries in the ASEAN region and providing enhanced connectivity to the North Eastern states. The ITM 2017 will also see an active participation by the Ministry of DONER to synergise the process of development of tourism in the North East region.

Singapore Global Convention from Dec 14-15

Institute Of Directors (IOD), India is organising its first ever Singapore Global Convention from December 14- 15, 2017 , at Hotel InterContinental, Singapore. Themed ‘Building an Ethical & Risk Resilient Enterprise’, the convention expects participation of over 15 countries. Singapore is among India’s largest trade and investment partner in ASEAN. It is the second largest investor in India. To strengthen the business opportunities between India and Singapore, IOD India is also organising a Global Business Meet during the convention. The objectives of the convention are to encourage the growth and development of risk resilient enterprises in the face of unprecedented risks such as financial, cyber frauds, environmental and the challenge of sustainable growth that organisations face today. India MICE Awards debuts in Delhi

A first of its kind, India MICE Awards made its debut at The Lalit New Delhi on November 27, 2017. The event honoured the achievers of the Meetings, Incentive, Conferences and Exhibitions (MICE) industry. Alphons Kannanthanam, Minister of State (I/C) for Tourism and Minister of State, Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology, Government of India, graced his presence at the event as the esteemed Chief Guest.  Suman Billa, Joint Secretary, Ministry of Tourism, Government of India, was the Guest of Honour. India MICE Awards is a token of appreciation, more than mere acknowledgement, of the dedication and toil that people of the industry have put in. The awards were divided into four categories: 1. Personal Awards: These awards lauds the legends and leaders, who have established themselves, and the youngsters, who need the encouragement. 2. Business Awards: These are for those organisations who have been outstanding in their respective fields and deserve the recognition. 3. Trending Awards: Decided by the critics, these are individuals who have done extraordinary work. 4. Partner Awards:  These are for the Partners, who have contributed to make the event a grand success. The voting is carefully monitored to avoid duplication and ensures transparency. The MICE industry in India is a big revenue earner and contributes a major share to the tourism and hospitality industry of the country.  India MICE Awards in a formal black-tie ceremony recognises the achievements and contribution made by the MICE industry players in boosting the tourism and hospitality industry in India. ICCA sees conglomeration of 1264 meeting experts

The 56th Congress of the International Congress and Convention Association – ICCA, held from Novemeber 12-15, in Prague, witnessed a total of 1,264 meeting industry experts from 79 countries. The event was organised by the Prague Convention Bureau with the support of more than 40 local partners. “According to the results of the impact study prepared for us by KPMG, multiplied revenues from the Prague congress industry were between 22 and 26 billion Czech Crowns in 2016. We expect that 15-25 association congresses or conferences could take place in Prague in the span of the next ten years as a result of the 56th ICCA Congress, generating a revenue of 2.1 billion Crowns in multiplication. Of course, this number may be far from final,” said Roman Muška, Director of the Prague Convention Bureau.

Oman to host UNWTO/UNESCO conference in December

The Sultanate of Oman is getting to host the second UNWTO/UNESCO Culture & Tourism Conference from December 11-12, 2017 at the new Oman Convention & Exhibition Centre in Muscat. The conference will bring together ministers of tourism and culture of different countries to identify key opportunities and obstacles for a stronger cooperation between tourism and culture, and to discuss sustainable development that strengthen the socio-economic links, reinforce mutual engagement in the promotion, protection and safeguarding of culture and heritage. The Omani government will be providing a free Oman visa to participants who wish to attend this conference. The United Nations has declared 2017 as the International Year of Sustainable Tourism for Development hence keeping in line with the theme the conference will revolve around sustainable development that strengthens the socio-economic links, reinforce mutual engagement in the promotion, protection and safeguarding of culture and heritage. The first edition of this conference was held in Cambodia in 2015.

WTM London 2017 concludes successfully

The final day of WTM London 2017 concluded with WTM Festivals, allowing visitors to experience the culture, hospitality and cuisine of the Caribbean, Tokyo, Indonesia, Ecuador, Bulgaria, Ghana, Senegal and Brazil. Pertinent issues such as Brexit, overtourism and development were debated among the tourism ministers’ agenda. The annual UNWTO and WTM Ministers Summit debated strategies to cope with overtourism, which is threatening the tourism trade in destinations such as Barcelona, Venice and Amsterdam. Taleb Rifai, Secretary General, UNWTO, said there have been many protests against overtourism in 2017, with slogans such as “tourists go home” and “tourists are terrorists.” He warned, “We cannot continue to build five-star hotels in three-star communities. We need to diversify visitors’ activities, reduce seasonality and raise awareness of less busy destinations.” WTM brought together the leadership of the International Hotel Investment Forum and WTM London’s expertise to create an exclusive platform for ministers and investors in travel destination development. Keith Evans, Vice President Hotels, Starwood Capital, highlighted Greece’s potential, “There’s a good strong fundamental tour infrastructure; Greece is setting itself up as a market that has an interesting few years ahead.”

Chander Mansharamani to continue as Vice Chairman, ICPB

Chander Mansharamani has been re-elected as Vice Chairman of India Convention Promotion Bureau (ICPB) for another two-year term. Amaresh Tiwari and Girish Kwatra will also continue on their respective posts of Hon. Secretary and Hon. Treasurer. This was declared during the association’s 30th Annual General Meeting and Elections for the Governing Board held at The Ashok in New Delhi, which was also attended by Suman Billa, Joint Secretary, Ministry of Tourism, Government of India and Chairman, ICPB. New appointments were made in the Hotel, Tour Operator and Congress / Convention Centres categories. The two new appointments in the hotel category were Hemant Mediratta and Saurabh Bhargava & Abinash Manghani (due to a tie for the second post). Gunjan Suri and Naveen Chibber took up the two new posts in the travel agency category while Ajay Vinayak and Anuj Wadhwa took the two posts in tour operator category. The post for the Congress / Convention Centres went to Sudeep Sarcar. Talking about the key priorities for the bureau now, Mansharamani, Vice Chairman, ICPB, said, “The government has been looking at us as the frontal organisation for marketing India as a convention destination. Keeping that in mind, we are completely invested to take things to the next level. Currently, we have outlined three core areas to focus on; first is market creation wherein creating our chapters and bidding of international conferences will be a part of that.
