India MICE Awards debuts in Delhi


A first of its kind, India MICE Awards made its debut at The Lalit New Delhi on November 27, 2017. The event honoured the achievers of the Meetings, Incentive, Conferences and Exhibitions (MICE) industry. Alphons Kannanthanam, Minister of State (I/C) for Tourism and Minister of State, Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology, Government of India, graced his presence at the event as the esteemed Chief Guest.  Suman Billa, Joint Secretary, Ministry of Tourism, Government of India, was the Guest of Honour. India MICE Awards is a token of appreciation, more than mere acknowledgement, of the dedication and toil that people of the industry have put in. The awards were divided into four categories: 1. Personal Awards: These awards lauds the legends and leaders, who have established themselves, and the youngsters, who need the encouragement. 2. Business Awards: These are for those organisations who have been outstanding in their respective fields and deserve the recognition. 3. Trending Awards: Decided by the critics, these are individuals who have done extraordinary work. 4. Partner Awards:  These are for the Partners, who have contributed to make the event a grand success. The voting is carefully monitored to avoid duplication and ensures transparency. The MICE industry in India is a big revenue earner and contributes a major share to the tourism and hospitality industry of the country.  India MICE Awards in a formal black-tie ceremony recognises the achievements and contribution made by the MICE industry players in boosting the tourism and hospitality industry in India. The awards are supported by Ministry of Tourism, Government of India, and other esteemed trade bodies. The event was graced by the who’s who of the MICE fraternity.

ICCA sees conglomeration of 1264 meeting experts


The 56th Congress of the International Congress and Convention Association – ICCA, held from Novemeber 12-15, in Prague, witnessed a total of 1,264 meeting industry experts from 79 countries. The event was organised by the Prague Convention Bureau with the support of more than 40 local partners. “According to the results of the impact study prepared for us by KPMG, multiplied revenues from the Prague congress industry were between 22 and 26 billion Czech Crowns in 2016. We expect that 15-25 association congresses or conferences could take place in Prague in the span of the next ten years as a result of the 56th ICCA Congress, generating a revenue of 2.1 billion Crowns in multiplication. Of course, this number may be far from final,” said Roman Muška, Director of the Prague Convention Bureau.

Oman to host UNWTO/UNESCO conference in December


The Sultanate of Oman is getting to host the second UNWTO/UNESCO Culture & Tourism Conference from December 11-12, 2017 at the new Oman Convention & Exhibition Centre in Muscat. The conference will bring together ministers of tourism and culture of different countries to identify key opportunities and obstacles for a stronger cooperation between tourism and culture, and to discuss sustainable development that strengthen the socio-economic links, reinforce mutual engagement in the promotion, protection and safeguarding of culture and heritage. The Omani government will be providing a free Oman visa to participants who wish to attend this conference. The United Nations has declared 2017 as the International Year of Sustainable Tourism for Development hence keeping in line with the theme the conference will revolve around sustainable development that strengthens the socio-economic links, reinforce mutual engagement in the promotion, protection and safeguarding of culture and heritage. The first edition of this conference was held in Cambodia in 2015.

WTM London 2017 concludes successfully

The final day of WTM London 2017 concluded with WTM Festivals, allowing visitors to experience the culture, hospitality and cuisine of the Caribbean, Tokyo, Indonesia, Ecuador, Bulgaria, Ghana, Senegal and Brazil. Pertinent issues such as Brexit, overtourism and development were debated among the tourism ministers’ agenda. The annual UNWTO and WTM Ministers Summit debated strategies to cope with overtourism, which is threatening the tourism trade in destinations such as Barcelona, Venice and Amsterdam. Taleb Rifai, Secretary General, UNWTO, said there have been many protests against overtourism in 2017, with slogans such as “tourists go home” and “tourists are terrorists.” He warned, “We cannot continue to build five-star hotels in three-star communities. We need to diversify visitors’ activities, reduce seasonality and raise awareness of less busy destinations.” WTM brought together the leadership of the International Hotel Investment Forum and WTM London’s expertise to create an exclusive platform for ministers and investors in travel destination development. Keith Evans, Vice President Hotels, Starwood Capital, highlighted Greece’s potential, “There’s a good strong fundamental tour infrastructure; Greece is setting itself up as a market that has an interesting few years ahead.”

Chander Mansharamani to continue as Vice Chairman, ICPB


Chander Mansharamani has been re-elected as Vice Chairman of India Convention Promotion Bureau (ICPB) for another two-year term. Amaresh Tiwari and Girish Kwatra will also continue on their respective posts of Hon. Secretary and Hon. Treasurer. This was declared during the association’s 30th Annual General Meeting and Elections for the Governing Board held at The Ashok in New Delhi, which was also attended by Suman Billa, Joint Secretary, Ministry of Tourism, Government of India and Chairman, ICPB. New appointments were made in the Hotel, Tour Operator and Congress / Convention Centres categories. The two new appointments in the hotel category were Hemant Mediratta and Saurabh Bhargava & Abinash Manghani (due to a tie for the second post). Gunjan Suri and Naveen Chibber took up the two new posts in the travel agency category while Ajay Vinayak and Anuj Wadhwa took the two posts in tour operator category. The post for the Congress / Convention Centres went to Sudeep Sarcar. Talking about the key priorities for the bureau now, Mansharamani, Vice Chairman, ICPB, said, “The government has been looking at us as the frontal organisation for marketing India as a convention destination. Keeping that in mind, we are completely invested to take things to the next level. Currently, we have outlined three core areas to focus on; first is market creation wherein creating our chapters and bidding of international conferences will be a part of that. TCEB unveils ‘Thailand Connect’ campaign for 2018


Thailand Convention and Exhibition Bureau (TCEB) unveiled the marketing communication campaign for the year 2018 entitled ‘THAILAND CONNECT Your Vibrant Journey to Business Success, decoded with chapters of possibilities’. The campaign is aimed at further enhancing a position of Thailand as leading bleisure destination in the region. The bureau expects that, by the end of next year, the country will welcome 1,192,000 international MICE visitors which generate revenue of 112 billion baht. Supawan Teerarat, Vice President of TCEB’s Strategic and Business Development, said, “TCEB has been introducing key fundamental pillars of MICE industry which include a diversity of destination, business opportunities, and people of Thailand. These strengths are well positioning Thailand as a leading destination for bleisure activities in the region.” TCEB’s campaign was launched at the 25th Incentive Travel & Convention, Meetings Asia (IT&CMA), and the 20th Corporate Travel World Asia-Pacific (CTW Asia-Pacific). The IT&CM Asia is recognised as the leading international MICE event centered in Asia-Pacific. “The marketing campaign is aimed at raising the industry profile and visits. BIEC accredited with ‘Gold’ rating from Green Building Councils


The newly constructed Hall 4 at the Bangalore International Exhibition Centre (BIEC) has been honoured with Gold ratings by both Indian Green Building Council (IGBC) under its New Building rating system and US Green Building Council (USGBC) under its Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) rating level. IGBC rating programme covers methodologies to cover diverse climatic zones and changing lifestyles. LEED certification is an official recognition that a project complies with the requirements prescribed within the LEED rating systems as created and maintained by USGBC. It is an internationally accepted benchmark for design, construction and operation of green buildings.
