54 per cent of all global travel is MICE: Suman Billa

The India Convention Promotion Bureau (ICPB), kick started its annual flagship event – the 9th Conventions India Conclave from October 13 to 15, 2016 at The Leela Ambience Convention Hotel. The event was inaugurated by Vinod Zutshi, Secretary, Ministry of Tourism, Govt of India,  Suman Billa, Joint Secretary, Tourism & Chairman, ICPB, Chander Mansharmani, Vice Chairman, ICPB, Pooja Joshi, General Manager, Delhi Tourism, Saurabh Bhargava, Honorary Treasurer, ICPB, and Amaresh Tiwari, Honorary Secretary, ICPB. Stating that 54 per cent of all global travel is MICE, Billa said, “There has been 0.69 per cent of growth, if we want to increase these numbers, MICE must lead from the front.” Billa said that MICE will show overall buoyancy. On the context of reforms in visa taken by the government, Zutshi said,” Matter for the reforms in visa has gone to the cabinet. E-visa, for business tourists at large has been agreed upon. Other e-visa reforms will also take place.” He mentioned the need to set up convention centres in Tier-2 cities. Extending a warm welcome note, Mansheramani said,” We should make the conclave a true marketing and networking platform. We have 44 organisations showcasing and more than 100 buyers. As an organisation we will bid for international conference.” Highlighting the status of MICE sector, he said, “MICE can be integral part of economic diplomacy, there is a need to prioritise source markets.”

5th International Buddhist Conclave begins in Varanasi-Sarnath from Oct 2-6

With a view to showcase and project the Buddhist heritage and pilgrim sites of India, the Ministry of Tourism has organised the 5th International Buddhist Conclave, from October 2-6, 2016, in Varanasi-Sarnath in collaboration with the state governments of Uttar Pradesh and Bihar. The conclave was inaugurated by Dr. Mahesh Sharma, Minister for Tourism & Culture on October 2, 2016, in New Delhi. Ministry of Tourism has received over 250 nominations from 38 countries for participation in the Conclave. This year’s conclave has ASEAN as a Guest of Honour partner and a large participation is expected from ASEAN countries which are also major source markets for India in general and the Buddhist Heritage sites in particular.

TCEB to host ASEAN conference with UNWTO on MICE

The Thailand Convention and Exhibition Bureau or TCEB will host the ASEAN Conference on MICE in Collaboration with UNWTO to enable a dialogue for leveraging knowledge and policy exchange, and driving regional ties towards the mutually beneficial goal of accommodating MICE travellers from around the globe. Nopparat Maythaveekulchai, President of TCEB said, “The ASEAN Conference on MICE in Collaboration with UNWTO is being held as part of the ASEAN strategy to provide a platform to help raise awareness and showcase the important role the MICE industry plays in the region among ASEAN leaders, especially to improve the quality and standard of infrastructure and facilities to accommodate the needs of MICE travellers from around the globe, right here in Southeast Asia. Additionally, the activity, which will draw more than 270 delegates from public and private organisations as well as MICE operators from across the region, will help promote Thailand as a high quality MICE destination in ASEAN.”

51st FHRAI Annual Convention kicks off with promising prospects for industry

The 51st FHRAI Annual Convention kicked off at the Amber Convention Centre in Indore, Madhya Pradesh. The event was inaugurated by Vishvas Sarang, Minister (I/C) for Cooperation, Bhopal Gas Tragedy Relief & Rehabilitation, Panchayat & Rural development, Malini Laxman Singh Gaur, Mayor of Indore; Vivek Nair, Chairman, Convention Organising Committee, FHRAI and Bharat Malkani, President, FHRAI. Welcoming all participants at the convention, Nair said that there is a need to create infrastructure to boost tourism in the country. He also said that GST should be re-looked at a reasonable limit. Malkhani noted that FHRAI completed six decades of existence and the focus of the organisation is on skill development. The association has instituted a study with the national green tribunal to bring out a book to run properties in a sustainable manner, which will be given to its members free of cost.

JATA Tourism EXPO unveiled in Tokyo

The JATA Tourism EXPO Japan officially opened with 140 countries and 47 regions in Japan. Delegates including Japan’s Minister of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism, Akihiro Ohta, and the Commissioner of the Japan Tourism Agency, Norifumi Idee were welcomed at the inaugural event. Ohta said that Japan wants to become an advanced tourism country, to push not only international inbound travel, but to also focus on more domestic travel as well. UNWTO Secretary-General Dr. Taleb Rifai, and David Scowsill, President and CEO, World Travel and Tourism Council (WTTC) also graced the occasion with their presence. Rifai stated that Japan’s ambitious target of recording 40 million annual visitors by the year 2020 – the original goal was 20 million, was achieved last year and first upped to 30 million before the current target was proposed.

600 Indian delegates to conglomerate for TAAI

The Travel Agents Association of India’s (TAAI) 63rd convention in Abu Dhabi from October 14-16, 2016 is likely to get about 600-700 delegates from across India. Jay Bhatia, National Treasurer and Chairman (Tourism Council), TAAI, while adding said, “We are also expecting our overseas members to participate that include DMCs and operators from the UAE and the Middle East region. ” He informed that Abu Dabi was chosen for the convention because of its proximity to India and good connections from most major cities of India.

NRAI convention from Sept 25-26 in Mumbai

The National Restaurant Association of India (NRAI) announced the first edition of its convention at St. Regis in Mumbai from September 25-26, 2016. Riyaaz Amlani, President, NRAI, said, “The two-day business convention will have multiple business sessions with speakers from the sector from across India. This will include three international speakers as well.” Attendees at the event will include individuals from the bar and the nightlife industry from across India encompassing business and informational workshops.
