Ethiopian Airlines to resume services to Conarky from Feb 1, 2017

Africa’s largest airline group, Ethiopian Airlines, shall resume services to Conakry on February 1, 2017. Conakry is the capital of The Republic of Guinea and a port city on the Atlantic Ocean serving as the country’s economic, financial and cultural centre. Guinea is a major producer of bauxite and has rich deposits of diamonds and gold. Group CEO of Ethiopian Airlines, Tewolde GebreMariam said, “Charting a route that joins Africa, East to West and North to South, Ethiopian is greatly contributing to the economic, tourism, and trade development of the African continent. Conakry will be our 54th African and 96th international destination.”  With Ethiopian’s entry into the Conakry market, passengers will also be able to connect to major cities in Asia, the Middle East and East and Southern Africa via Ethiopian’s hub at Addis Ababa, including Beijing, Guangzhou, Shanghai, Beirut, Hong Kong, Tokyo, Seoul, Bangkok, Dubai, Mumbai, Johannesburg and Nairobi.

Bhutan Airlines connects Paro-Bodh Gaya from Dec 4


Bhutan Airlines will start flying to Bodh Gaya next month, catering to the Buddhist pilgrimage market. Effective 4 December 2016, the airline will fly from Bangkok and Paro to the UNESCO-listed heritage site in India’s Bihar state, which is said to be where the Lord Buddha gained enlightenment. Flights will operate twice a week (every Wednesday and Sunday) on a seasonal basis, ending on February 26, 2017. A 122-seat Airbus A319 aircraft will be deployed on the route.

IndiGo fares, ancillaries now live on Travelport


IndiGo Airlines will now have its fares and ancillaries on Travelport’s travel commerce platform in India. The announcement was made in September, and now the content is live on Travelport. The launch saw in attendance Aditya Ghosh, President & Whole Time Director, IndiGo,  and Gordon Wilson, President & CEO, Travelport. The partnership will see IndiGo leverage Travelport’s leading merchandising capabilities to bring IndiGo’s brand proposition to life for travellers in India, and will be rolled out to agents globally in a phased approach.

Brussels Airlines to start Mumbai-Brussels flight from March 2017


Come March 2017, Brussels Airlines will come on board with Lufthansa Group Airlines. Lufthansa Group Airlines represents Lufthansa, Swiss and Austrian in India. Wolfgang Will, Director South Asia, Lufthansa Group Airlines, said, “Lufthansa Group Airlines will also now represent Brussels Airlines in India from March 2017 onwards and has also announced five flights from Mumbai to Brussels from the same month.”

Zoom Air to start operations from December


Zoom Air, India’s new  full service airline, will start operations from Delhi from December this year. Koustav M Dhar, CEO and Managing Director, Zoom Air, said, “We are going to start flying from Delhi from December. The aircraft are here and we are starting with a CRG 200LR aircraft, 50 seater with 2X2 complete premium economy seater.” He added that the airline will be connecting 16 stations across India. The airline has its hub in Delhi and will connect the city with places like Durgapur in West Bengal and Jaisalmer. From Kolkata the airline will fly Aizawl and Tezu and Pasighat in Arunachal Pradesh.

Singapore Airlines introduces Indian thali


Singapore Airlines has introduced a traditional, Indian set meal – ‘Ruchi Thali’ for its Business Class passengers travelling between India and Singapore. The menu is specially curated by renowned Chef Sanjeev Kapoor from Singapore Airlines’ International Culinary Panel. Paolo Zambrano, Manager–Food & Beverage, Singapore Airlines, said, “We have put together a selection of dishes, which will give Singapore Airlines passengers, a sense of dining at home.” Ruchi Thali is currently being offered on the Mumbai and Delhi flights. It will progressively be introduced on other Singapore Airlines India sectors.

Etihad Airways launches new mobile app


Etihad Airways has extended its digital reach with the introduction of a new mobile application for Android smartphones. Guests can now organise their journeys directly on the app, which includes booking flights, checking in for flights, securing a mobile boarding pass, checking flight status, or viewing their Etihad Guest miles balance. Additional key features include a simple flight search function, a credit card scanner for payments, a passport scan facility to check in, and improved flight seat maps. Justin Warby, Vice President of Direct Sales for Etihad Airways, said: “This is a step forward in our innovation strategy to enable a convenient, more personalised digital travel experience.”

Air India and Jet Airways increase Sharjah flights for business travellers


Air India Express and Jet Airways have both launched new Sharjah routes this year catering to business travellers and tourists, plus Indian expatriates working in the UAE. Jet Airways introduced a new daily route to Sharjah International Airport from Mangaluru (IXE) in India’s southern state of Karnataka in August and had announced a new daily service from Kozhikode, or Calicut (CCJ) in Kerala, beginning 30 October 2016. Kochi-headquartered Air India Express has, so far, added three new routes this year connecting Sharjah with Mumbai (SAHAR), Chandigarh (IXC) and Tiruchirapalli (TRZ) airports, bringing its total number of direct Sharjah services to seven. The low-cost airline also operates direct flights to Sharjah from Kochi (COK), Kozhikode (CCJ), Thiruvananthapuram (TRV) and Varanasi (VNS).

First Aero Expo from Nov 18-19 in Delhi


India’s first Aero Expo organised by the PHD Chamber of Commerce and Industry and the Ministry of Civil Aviation will be held in New Delhi from November 18-19, 2016. The expo aims to deliberate on remote and regional connectivity, development of technology and infrastructure, along with the new opportunities embodied in the industry. K. N.
