Jet launches direct daily between Bengaluru-Colombo from Jan 5


Jet Airways has announced the launch of a daily direct flight from Bengaluru to Colombo with effect from January 5, 2017. With this new connection, Bengaluru will be the second Indian city after Mumbai to be linked to Colombo and Jet Airways’ third daily service to the Sri Lankan capital. Jet will offer added connection for travellers between South Indian cities and Colombo via Bengaluru. Jayaraj Shanmugam, Chief Commercial Officer, Jet Airways, said “Jet Airways is delighted to launch a direct service between Bengaluru and Colombo. With increasing economic activity between India and Sri Lanka, Jet Airways realised the gap in the connectivity and plugged it with this direct connection. Guests between these two destinations will be offered the best in-flight product and service excellence.”

First Delhi to Bhatinda flight takes off along with new airport


Union Minister for Civil Aviation P. Ashok Gajapathi Raju launched the first flight from Delhi to Bathinda and inaugurated the Bathinda airport in Virk Kalan village on December 12. Among other dignitaries present were AAI chairman Guru Prasad Mohapatra, Union Food Processing Minister Harsimrat Kaur Badal, Punjab Deputy Chief Minister Sukhbir Singh Badal and other BJP leaders. Raju said that the new terminal and the flight connectivity will not only boost passenger travel but also be a multiplier for the overall economic growth of the region. The New Civil Air Terminal is spread in 1200 sq. mtrs.  The terminal has been constructed at a total cost of Rs. 25 crores.  The terminal is equipped to handle 100 passengers (50 Departure + 50 Arrival) with modern passenger facilities such as two (2) Check-in-counters, one (1) Security Check X-Ray Machine, one (1) Arrival Baggage Conveyor Belt, one (1) Reserved VIP Lounge with Car Parking and Apron for two (2) ATR-72-600 type aircraft.

Now, hand baggage tag-free at five Indian airports?


Ministry of Civil Aviation has announced that they could be done away with stamped hand baggage tags at Delhi, Kolkata, Chennai, Hyderabad and Bangalore airports from December 15. “We recently issued orders to do away with stamping of hand baggage tags at the time of security screening. The practice will be introduced on a pilot basis at five airports and if successful, may be expanded to other airports across the country. This will save passengers’ time while boarding and will not be a security hassle in any manner,” said R N Choubey, Secretary, Ministry of Civil Aviation, in an interview to The Hindu. The Central Industrial Security Force (CISF), which looks after security at airports, is likely to implement the move within a week, informed Choubey.

Operations at Bengaluru airport partially closed from Feb 19-Apr 30


According to a report from Bangalore International Airport Limited (BIAL), Kempegowda International Airport (Bangalore-BLR) will not have flights landing and taking off between 10:30 a.m. and 5 p.m. from February 19 to April 30, 2017. The move is to facilitate upgradation work in the existing runway. The operations at the airport will be partially closed for three months next year. The runway will be partially closed during the rehearsals and show timings of the Aero India 2017. Authorities have worked out the flight schedules in the hours preceding and following the closure each day during this period with the Air Traffic Control and all the airline companies that operate in KIA, with the approval of the civil aviation ministry, a statement said. KIA is also building the second runway towards the southern side of the airport, which is estimated to become functional by September 2019. The second terminal will be operational by 2021. Together, the two terminals will be handling 55 million passengers a year by 2021.

Air India rolls out direct flight from Delhi-Madrid

Air India launched its first direct flight from Delhi-Madrid in Delhi, which was graced by P. Ashok Gajapathi Raju, Minister, Civil Aviation; Pankaj Srivastava, Director-Commercial, Air India. Madrid is Air India’s ninth European destination and 42nd international destination. Srivastava said, “The nine-hour flight would be able to cut down the flying time to Madrid by 4-5 hours, and would offer further connections to South American countries like Argentina, Brazil, Columbia and Chile.” The thrice a week flight with a B787 Dreamliner, offers a convenient departure at 1425hrs from Delhi and arrival at Madrid at 2020 hrs. From Madrid, the departure time is 2150hrs and arrival in Delhi at 1110 hrs the next day.

Ethiopian Airlines to resume services to Conarky from Feb 1, 2017

Africa’s largest airline group, Ethiopian Airlines, shall resume services to Conakry on February 1, 2017. Conakry is the capital of The Republic of Guinea and a port city on the Atlantic Ocean serving as the country’s economic, financial and cultural centre. Guinea is a major producer of bauxite and has rich deposits of diamonds and gold. Group CEO of Ethiopian Airlines, Tewolde GebreMariam said, “Charting a route that joins Africa, East to West and North to South, Ethiopian is greatly contributing to the economic, tourism, and trade development of the African continent. Conakry will be our 54th African and 96th international destination.”  With Ethiopian’s entry into the Conakry market, passengers will also be able to connect to major cities in Asia, the Middle East and East and Southern Africa via Ethiopian’s hub at Addis Ababa, including Beijing, Guangzhou, Shanghai, Beirut, Hong Kong, Tokyo, Seoul, Bangkok, Dubai, Mumbai, Johannesburg and Nairobi.

Bhutan Airlines connects Paro-Bodh Gaya from Dec 4


Bhutan Airlines will start flying to Bodh Gaya next month, catering to the Buddhist pilgrimage market. Effective 4 December 2016, the airline will fly from Bangkok and Paro to the UNESCO-listed heritage site in India’s Bihar state, which is said to be where the Lord Buddha gained enlightenment. Flights will operate twice a week (every Wednesday and Sunday) on a seasonal basis, ending on February 26, 2017. A 122-seat Airbus A319 aircraft will be deployed on the route.
