8.7% hike in air pricing likely in 2018: GBTA & CWT

According to the 2018 Global Travel Forecast, airfares in India are forecast to see an 8.7 per cent hike in 2018. The Asia Pacific region will see a 2.8 per cent rise in airfares in 2018, with domestic demand increasing in India and China. The report has been prepared by GBTA Foundation in partnership with Carlson Wagonlit Travel, and with the support of the Carlson Family Foundation. The report suggests that global airfares are expected to rise 3.5 percent in 2018; hotel prices are expected to be 3.7 percent higher; and ground transportation such as taxis, trains and buses are expected to rise only 0.6 percent. Jeanne Liu, Vice President – Research, GBTA Foundation, said, “The most successful programs will have to keep a watchful eye on both geopolitical risks and a rapidly-changing supplier landscape as they re-evaluate strategy often and adapt as necessary.” Kurt Ekert, president and CEO, Carlson Wagonlit Travel, said, “The global numbers from this forecast should be considered strong leading indicators of what 2018 will mean for global businesses, as we anticipate higher spending.”

GPS to introduce international destination workshops

The second leg of this year’s GPS, starting July 13, will launch an unique programme of introducing educational workshops with international destinations. Harmandeep Singh Anand, Managing Director, GPS, says, “We have started working with international tourism boards to do an educational workshop for travel agents starting this September-October. Titled ‘GPS Educational Destination Workshop – International’ (EDWIn), it will involve interested agents signing up to travel to a particular international destination to learn about the country at a highly subsidised participation fee.” GPS has already tied up with Singapore Airlines as its international airline partner as well as Genting HK. It is also in talks with various NTOs including Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand, Indonesia, the Philippines, Korea, UAE, Egypt, Turkey and Greece. GPS will soon launch a similar programme for domestic destination in partnership with various state boards. Anand explains further, “This will be open only to tier II and tier III travel agents as they are the ones who don’t get enough exposure to the trade as against those in metro cities.” Hitting five more cities through July and August this year is the second leg of the Global Panorama Showcase (GPS – the multi-city trade show for tier II and III cities). It will start with Ahmedabad on July 13, going on to Chandigarh on July 20, Kolkata on July 27, reaching Kochi on August 3 and ending in Pune on August 10. FICCI’s 3rd Tourism Investment Meet showcased face-to-face scheduled meetings

The third edition of FICCI Tourism Investment Meet was held in New Delhi on July 5-6, 2017 in an attempt to facilitate investment through one-on-one meetings. State tourism departments showcased their policies and facilities that would encourage potential investors to capitalise on tourism. State governments with the likes of Uttarakhand, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Andhra Pradesh, Odisha, Maharashtra and West Bengal took part on the occasion and solicited investment in tourism infrastructure through presentations and face-to-face pre-scheduled meetings with the investors. Speaking at the inauguration, Dr Jyotsna Suri, Past President FICCI, & Chairperson, FICCI Tourism Committee, said, “ We have gathered investors from around India, from hotels & resorts, convention centres, theme parks, adventure tourism, roadways etc., and hope this will give tourism the essential push it needs.” Rashmi Verma, Secretary – Tourism, Govt. of India in her special address said, “The tourism industry is one of the largest sectors all over the country, and is a major driver of the economy and for employment generation. India, with its abundant tourism products, is replete with different destinations, topography, weather and an old heritage. We have been jumping positions in several reports and have been doing well, especially in the month of May where growth has been 19.4 per cent and is one of the highest achieved. It has been encouraging to see this during May, which is considered as a lean month. In a bid to prepare its members for the new Goods and Service Tax (GST) regime, Association of Domestic Tour Operators of India(ADTOI) organised a workshop for its members on July 1, 2017. The workshop was conducted at India Habitat Centre, Lodhi Road, New Delhi. G. D. Lohani, Commissioner, Central Board of Excise and Customs (CBEC); Shikhar Pant, Assistant commissioner, CBEC; Ashish Gupta, Consulting CEO, FAITH; Gyan Bhushan, Economic Advisor, Government of India and other officials from Ministry of Tourism were present during  the meeting to interact with the members and  answer their queries on GST.

TAAI Convention from Aug 18-20 in Kunming, China

The Managing Committee of TAAI has decided Kunming as the venue for the 64th Convention & Exhibition of TAAI, to be held from August 18-20, 2017. Global tourism supports twice as many jobs: WTTC

According to a new report by the World Travel & Tourism Council (WTTC), the global Travel & Tourism sector directly sustains twice as many jobs as the financial sector, and five times as many jobs as the chemicals manufacturing sector. The WTTC Benchmarking Report 2017 compares Travel & Tourism to eight other sectors, which are considered to have similar breadth and global presence, across 27 countries and six regions. In 2016, Travel & Tourism supported 108 million jobs directly, and 292 million in total, taking the direct, indirect, and induced impact into account. The report shows that both on direct and total level, Travel & Tourism employs more people than the automotive manufacturing, banking, mining, chemicals manufacturing, and financial services sectors. It also shows that the power of Travel & Tourism to create jobs is significantly higher than that of financial services when you compare their contribution to GDP.  Financial services generate 19.4 per cent of the world’s GDP compared to 10.2 per cent by Travel & Tourism, but the latter supports twice as many jobs worldwide. Travel & Tourism generated a total of USD$7.6 trillion in GDP in 2016, which makes the sector’s GDP contribution larger than that of banking (USD$4.8 trillion), mining (USD$5.0 trillion), agriculture (USD$5.8 trillion), automotive manufacturing (USD$6.1 trillion), and chemicals manufacturing (USD$6.5 trillion). Global Travel & Tourism is forecast to grow by 4.0 per cent per year over the next decade, which is significantly faster than the global economy at 2.7% and all other sectors covered in the study apart from the financial sector and banking. PHD Chamber of Commerce and Industry’s second edition of the Aviation exposition -Aero Expo India 2017 will be held from November 2-5 in New Delhi. The first Aero exposition was organised last year at Indira Gandhi International Airport with the patronage of the Ministry of Civil Aviation. The 4-day long Aero Expo is also going to witness India’s first ‘Heli-Expo’ at the Pawan Hans Heliport in Rohini on November 4-5. K.N. International Conference on Tourism Technology in Kochi from June 9

Focusing on the pertinent aspects on building business through technological platforms, the country’s biggest tourism technology meet, the second edition of International Conference on Tourism Technology (ICTT), will begin in Kochi on June 9. “Around 500 delegates, including tour operators, hoteliers, resort owners, home stays, SEO (search engine optimisation) companies, software firms, social media marketing companies and bloggers, are expected to attend the conference,” said Association of Tourism Trade Organisation (ATTOI) president Anish Kumar P K. The conference will include topics such as managing online reputations; using WhatsApp, Snapchat, Facebook, Instagram and other such tools for product marketing; writing content for websites and blogs; making payment gateway more efficient; and video marketing on Facebook Live and YouTube.
