India, a top market for cruising from Singapore: Srithar

Cruising from Singapore is steadily becoming one of the key activities for Indian travellers. In 2016, Singapore reported 1.2 million cruise passengers with a double-digit growth of 16 per cent as compared to 2015, out of which 100,000 were from India, an increase of 29 per cent over 2015 figures, according to a consumer survey, informed G.B. Srithar, RD SAMEA, by Singapore Tourism Board (STB) at the second edition of India Cruise Forum in Mumbai, organised by the STB. “India is a key source market for cruising out of Singapore. STB will continue to work closely with in-market partners to raise awareness of cruising as a great holiday option and sustain the growth of Singapore as a cruising hub in South East Asia,” added Srithar.

TCEB’s new campaign offers incentives for Indian exhibitors

The Thailand Convention & Exhibition Bureau (TCEB) has launched two campaigns that offer incentives for exhibitors as well as attendees from India. The delegation, led by Kanokporn Damrongkul, Senior Business Development Manager, Exhibitions Department, TCEB, was in Mumbai to launch these two campaigns. The ‘Exhibiz in Market’ campaign is its latest drive towards expanding exhibition space at international exhibitions in Thailand. Damrongkul reveals, “India is an active participant in Thailand’s trade shows, contributing 2.92 per cent of total overseas exhibitors in 2015. The majority of them exhibited in the food and agriculture sector followed by automotive and health and wellness. TCEB’s Exhibiz in Market scheme is a new funding initiative conceived to generate pavilions at international trade shows in Thailand. The scheme offers financial assistance between USD 1,500 – USD 5,500 for leaders of commercial pavilions between 36 sqm and 250 sqm in size.” The other scheme called ‘Connect Business Campaign’ offers incentive of USD 100 per person for attendees with a maximum of 300 pax per show.

16th APLIC 2017 from May 17-19 in Malaysia

Malayasia will play host to the 16th Asia Pacific Life Insurance Congress (APLIC) from May 17-19, 2017, at Resorts World, Genting Highlands. Organised by the National Association of Life Insurance and Family Takaful Advisors (NAMLIFA), this is the third time that Malaysia is conducting APLIC after that in 1993 and 2005. The congress is a biennial event that will be co-hosted by member countries of the Asia Pacific Financial Services Association (APFinSA) together with support of Malaysia Convention & Exhibition Bureau (MyCEB), an agency under the Ministry of Tourism and Culture Malaysia. Themed as “Together As One”, the congress aims to promote the business development and productivity of financial services professionals. More than 5,000 life insurance practitioners from 13 countries including Singapore, Thailand, Indonesia, Philippines, Vietnam, India, Sri Lanka, Hong Kong, Macau, Japan, Australia, China and Malaysia will attend the bi-annual event, making it the largest financial services congress in the region. “The 16th APLIC being an international event, is set to promote Malaysia as an international Meetings, Incentives, Conventions & Exhibition destination in Asia.  As we target at least 60 per cent of foreign participation, the inflow of foreign participants will also boost the tourism industry in Malaysia that will have a direct and spillover effect on the local economy,” said Tang Kia Sing, Organising Chairman of the 16th APLIC.

ICTT 2017 meet from June 8-10 in Kochi

An impressive line-up of technology industry experts from across the globe will attend the upcoming International Conference on Tourism Technology (ICTT) to deliberate on the paramount role of technology in giving a fillip to the travel and tourism industry through interactive engagements with customers and providing excellent products and services. Association of Tourism Trade Organisation (ATTOI), with the support of Kerala Tourism, will organise the three-day event at Le Meridien Hotel in Kochi from June 8 to 10. NIMA targets new MICE destinations for 2017

The Network of Indian MICE Agents (NIMA) is focusing on exploring new MICE destinations in India and abroad. “Every year, we introduce a new destination. In 2016, we promoted Catalonia in Spain. This year, we are on a lookout for a new destination in India and abroad,” said Gajesh Girdar, National Coordinator, NIMA, at a networking event in Delhi. Speaking on the theme for the year 2017, Girdar added, “Every year we come up with some theme, last year, it was ‘More and much more’, and for this year, it is ‘Let’s Connect’.” NIMA’s initiation of a mobile app, Lets Connect version 1.0, for NIMA’s MICE operators and partners will make it the first travel agent association in India to have one, claims Girdar. Elaborating on the same, he claims, “We will become the first travel agent association of India to come out with a mobile app. We aim to come out with new technologies and ideas. We shall provide training programmes on a pan India basis, specially targeting Tier-II and III cities, focusing on technologies and some unique destinations.”

Vizag hosts CII conference

The Confederation of Indian Industry, Andhra Pradesh in association with AP Tourism, Government of AP, recently organised a conference on Destination Vizag ‘A Hidden Paradise of the East’ in Vishakhapatnam. About 25 representatives of destination management companies joined the conference. They were taken for a tour of Buddhist Circuit in Visakhapatnam as well as an Eco Tourism tour to Araku, Anantagiri hill region of Visakhapatnam District.  While addressing the conference Pravin Kumar, IAS Collector Vizag, said that most of the tourist attractions in Visakhapatnam are unexplored, and mentioned that through good promotional initiatives and marketing the city could emerge as major tourist destination in future.  Sreekanth Nagulapalli, IAS, Secretary, Tourism, Go AP, shared tourist attractions in Andhra Pradesh and Government’s tourism policy to promote infrastructure in tourism sector. Dr Subhash Goyal, Chairman, STIC group, said that Vishakhapatnam needs to be marketed well. He suggested to form a joint working group to initiate the discussion Andhra Tourism Mart. Chetan Gupta, General Secretary, ADTOI, suggested for more air connectivity, need for Tourism Information Offices in the micro cities and need for developing package tours. Hari Narayan, IAS, Commissioner, GVMC said that Municipal Administration is working to promote Quality of Life for both citizens and visitors and many projects are being initiated towards Smart City Project.

TCEB and Bangkok University join hands to train MICE personnel

To meet the growing demand for skilled personnel and executives in the meetings, incentives, conventions and exhibitions sector, the Bangkok University and the Thailand Convention and Exhibition Bureau (TCEB) have commenced the country’s first MICE curriculum.  They signed a memorandum of understanding last year to run the new curriculum. “Our MICE curriculum is the first and only one in the country. First-class students are now at the Rangsit campus,” said Suchada Chareanpunsirikul, dean of the university’s School of Humanities and Tourism Management. She said the country had been facing a shortage of skilled labour for the MICE sector for years. The Bangkok University is providing large-scale facilities for the new curriculum, with advanced equipment and facilities for MICE learners from both Thailand and abroad.

11.6% growth likely in business travel spending in 2017: GBTA

The Double digit business travel spending growth continues for India, despite fears of fallout from the country’s demonetisation efforts, according to the latest Global Business Travel Association (GBTA) BTI™ Outlook – India report. “India continues to position itself to become a world leader in business travel for decades to come,” said Gaurav Sundaram, GBTA India’s regional director. “Despite fears surrounding the demonetisation efforts, India saw a 10.9 percent growth in year-over-year business travel spending for the second quarter of 2016 – even higher than our last report projected.” The GBTA Foundation report forecasts 11.4 percent growth in business travel spending in 2016, followed by another 11.6 percent in 2017 – both increases over our previous forecast – reaching $36.8 billion USD. India continues to climb the world rankings of business travel markets, moving up five spots during the early 2000s to become the 10th largest global business travel market at the end of 2015. Forecasts predicted India would pass Brazil last year and will likely surpass both South Korea and Italy in 2017. GBTA projects India will become the 6th largest business travel market in the world by the end of 2019. GBTA forecasts domestic business travel spending will continue to grow at consistently high rates, 11.8 percent in 2017, reaching $33.8 billion USD. India’s international outbound (IOB) business travel spending has shown subdued growth in the 5-6 percent per year range. GBTA’s IOB forecast for 2016 has been revised upward from 3.1 percent projected previously to 5.4 percent.
